Carbon vs graphite vs fiberglass ice rods
« on: Nov 28, 2005, 11:53 PM »
What is your preference when it comes to these type of ice fishing rods?
Do you like one type better than another, and why?

It depends on the application. If I need a sensitive feel, I go with Graphite, If I am using the rod as a strike indicator, I go with fiberglass.

By the way, I am pretty sure Carbon=Graphite

A few years back when the graphite ice rods first hit the market, in general they were not good, brittle in the cold and were easily nicked and broken getting tossed in with other ice gear.  After I broke more than a few I went back to fiberglass.  In the last few years better strains of the material have made the rods much tougher and I have retired most of my old fiberglass rods.
When the going gets weird the weird turn pro.

my new rob has a solid carbon fiber blank and a graphite handle feels nice but didn't get to try it out yet.  can hold it up to your voicebox and talk and feel in in the handle.

Ugly Stiks are fiberglass...

Oh yeah, I use both graphite and fiberglass, although I prefer graphite.

it was always my impression that graphite was lighter, also more sensitive.
fiberglas was heavier. although i don't know how much weight is a facture
on such a short rod.

I've used both and I like graphite much better.  With smaller diameter graphite you have much better sensitivity without losing any backbone.  Fiberglass that is really sensative turns into a wet noodle when fighting pounder slabs.  Using a spring bobber as an indicator is by far my favorite thing to do with the stiffer rods.  IMO

If I'm jigging with it, it's graphite. If I'm setting it in a tip-down, it's glass.

I prefer fiberglass, they have a considerably more flex and absorb more shock during the cold months than graphite(in rods of the same weight).  But for heavier applications (big lakers or toothies), graphite is stronger with a smaller diameter than glass.

Intersing info everyone. I like to use fiberglass for the larger fish species and carbon for the more subtle nips from the smaller fish. ;D
