Just wanted to know what you bought this year that was a game changer for you?
I bought a whiplass and hooked up a northern quick strike to it.... It was an awesome preformer.
Also got a salmo lure and that pounded fish my whole last day
-
Jiffy Pro 4! Bently Tungsten Jigs! Mucks! Starlite Chem Sticks! Showdown 5.6 Dual Beam! Otter Pro Sled!
Had a great time with all of this gear and packed in a pretty good season in a matter of weeks. Very happy with all of these purchases and looking to get a double flip shanty next year and maybe a camera!!! Can't wait...

Hands down, it is the LX-7, it has made a Huge difference on the ice for me ! A close second is the Striker Ice Lite Suit and last but certainly not the least, the Custom Laker Taker, Trout rod that Drifter_016/Dave Orr, up in Yellowknife, NWT built for me ! The Strikemaster Glide Lite sled also gets an Honorable mention !

-
Too easy, an electric log splitter. Gives me more time to use the new Bravo, auger, flasher, and reel.
-
Thorne Bros Quiverstick
-
Otter Pro XT900 Cabin, its going to be a good year!
-
Otter Wild 2 shanty and Aqua vu Quad Cam, I'd take it over a flasher any day!
-
This is too easy to. Three simple things,
1. took a promotion at work and I now work a split shift so now I won't loose half of saturday sleeping.
2. My salary grew by 25% this spring so now I can acutally afford to fish again.
3. My fiance loves fish so now I have a fishing partner thats almost as crazy as I am.
-
A Showdown Dual Beam, no more drilling a hole and hoping to catch fish.
-
Nothing "new" but new to me. An FL-8 and a Jiffy 30, both minty, for a whopping $105. Can't wait to use both.
-
Just bought a pro 4, jason Mitchell pro thermal, shappell 3000 and a ton of jigs plus getting more! Now I just need to find a tackle bag I like!!! CAN'T WAIT!!!!! :icefish:
-
Nothing major this year...took care of that the last couple years. I do have 3 thorne bros rods I'm anxiously awaiting to get done. Have picked up some jigs to custom paint on a rainy day. Just got a new pair of pacs...Irish setters. Last but not least, got my name on waiting list for a Black Betty reel for the TB hole hopping rod I'm having made. The ice can't come soon enough!!

-
I am still waiting to try out my strikemaster lazer mag, that I bought off my neighbor up at camp 2 yrs ago,,, I will probably buy his hut also *though I really don't need it.. (clam suitcase type),, haven't been able to get rid of it for him, so I will probably end up buyint it , just so the mice don't eat it.. Oh, and have a new pair of snowpants ordered from North Face.. on their way..

clam big foot XL 6000 very easy for one man to put up and down lots of room for the family
-
Having always fished with my fathers Equipment, I figured it was time to branch out and get my own stuff now that I got a decent job
So with the help of all the members on this board, I got the new strikemaster 35cc light, Otter pro lodge, and marcum 7
-
Not for ice fishing but I picked up a Remington Model 6 pump .30-06 (essentially a BDL grade 7600) with a scope for $500. I've wanted one of these since I was 10. Beautiful high gloss dark walnut wood, deep bluing, smooth action with no rattle...
My best purchase for hardwater this year is going to be a flasher or underwater camera, one or the other. For commercial perch fishing on Champlain I know I can make back the money spent on one in less than half of a season.
-
2012 700 Yamaha Grizzly

Now it's all about making up for lost time. Fishing, hunting, and milking free cows.

Maybe I should post this in the MOD's section but this fits the topic! Christmas Lights and an adaptor! "What the heck?" you are all thinking but check this out! You know those LED string lights, they are all enclosed in a tube and can be connected together by the round plugs on each end. Meant for outdoor use and totally sealed. Then, get one of those little 110v power adapters that fit into a 12v socket and make a 12v plug with alligator clips on it. Run the string lights around the poles in your portable, hook em up and bang! You got a fully lit ice hut inside! I can see everything in my hut, and those things will run three days or more on a fishfinder battery! I did a test. Set em up, two strings hooked to a battery. Voltage to start was 12.3, after 8 HOURS, it read 11.9 volts! Un hooked em and the battery came back up to 12.2! Awesome little trick, especially for the guys out after dark!!! Very low cost!

You lost me with the "little 110v power adapter". What is that??
-
Most significant hunting/fishing purchase was a 2013 Can Am Outlander 1000 in camo finish. What a beast! Love my jet boil as well. Now I am thinking about these babies for a 10 day Montana trip. Little concerned about theft though considering the price but these babies solve a whole list of age old problems when fishing 24 hours a day for 10 days straight.

-
I picked up a used Frabill Trekker DLX, and the portable case and ice transducer for my Humminbird 788ci.
-
I bought the new Black Betty 6061, and matched it with a wicked ultralight rod, and added on 2 lb braid. What a setup for gills, I love it.
-
Couple of new rod/reel combos, one new jigging rod to replace one with a broken tip, and (the same day the tip broke) a clam hard sided rod case that holds 4 rod/reel combos. Just got a new 365nM flashlight for charging glow jigs, have yet to use it on the ice but it sure seems to kick the poop out of the tazer I was using before, at least on the kitchen counter!
-
Went out this morning wearing a new pair of Artic Sports Muck Boots. Toasty and comfy. Too bad my old boots lasted as long as they did....
-
I bought a year old Frabill Guardian 2-3 man flip over shanty that already had a cover, hyfax and a hitch so I can tow it with my snowmobile. I also bought a Striker ice hardwater suit. And a couple more Beaver dam tip-ups. Very happy with my purchases this ice season.
-
My purchases this season new redhead boots, a couple of heritage lakers and swedish made for my lazer auger. What a different the new blades made over the old china made blades that it came with.
-
A set of jack traps.
-
Frabill Straight Line Reel. It is stinkin awesome in shallow water.
-
Snow Shoes,
Saved my life a few times so far.
-
AugustWest has it nailed.......... Far and away my best purchase this season or any season are my recreational outdoor licenses. Fishing, hunting, boating, it's all I really need or want. The rest is just icing.

Hello....Mine would be the EC INLINE REEL and next would be a Dewalt 20 volt hammer drill with a adapter for my auger. No more hand drilling deep ice !!!!!! Be safe STEVE

-
You lost me with the "little 110v power adapter". What is that??
So that 110v power adapter converts 12DC to 110VAC? Picture please....

Only getting out 4-5 times a week, it's barely worth buying a fishing license any more! ;)
My best purchase, Clam spooler/ St. Croix Legend rod. Great for Crappies in shallow water!
-
bought 6 new heritage tip up pair of muck artic pros
-
Heritage lakers are awesome and KTP has them for great prices.
-
Frabil ice suit! Don't have to layer as much and have been in some rough weather. Rain, wind and snow and have NEVER got cold or wet, it is like WEARING a shanty! One of the best investments I have ever made. I bought this after suggestions from some of the guys here on the shanty and I can't thank them enough for their help when I was checking out suits!
-
Gotta say, love my Clam Spooler too.
Also, really love the Marmish Rod for gills in shallow!!!
-
my 6061 reel matched with a 28" med wicked rod for eyes and perch , I beat the tar out of it and it held up great , going to get another set this year , and i hear 13 is coming out with another straight line reel
-
upgraded the vex fl8 with a fl20 with proview ducer at the end of last season.cant wait to spend some time with it this winter.lol
-
It was also a good purchase to get a Polaris sportsman 850 because that thin hauls on the ice.
-
i haven't bought anything YET, but if all goes well, i'll be able to put a down payment on a nice little Mazda B2200 1/2 ton pickup truck with a custom shell this next week.
this would replace my crappy falling-apart-at-the-seams chevy Corsica, and let me not only carry more gear, but also i'll be able to get out when the weather is less than agreeable.
and if all goes REALLY well, i'll have rod racks, carpeting, storage compartments, and some other customizations all finished before the ice is safe.
-
Hands down my Black Diamond Headlamp, purchased it for setting up goose decoys. But I can see it coming in real handy for setting up and taking out tip ups after dark.
-
Vexilar FLX28
-
Cabelas heated gloves $99 black friday sale for my wife & I with 4 spare batteries from Gerbing. we got them yesterday & she says it's the best present ever ;D
No more cold hands on the ice, or in the woods ;)
-
This season has been just fine tuning. But last years game changer was the ION auger. I will not go back to gas! Friends that used it have went out and bought one.
-
Last year I bought a Vexilar FL-8 and the few times I got to use it I loved it. This year I got a Frabill ice suit coming, assuming it's going to be drastically better than wearing carharts.

Eskimo Flipmo2
Four rods, each equipped with a different presentation
Portable Buddy Heater
Strikemaster Lazer Mag
Prior to this season, all I had was the auger and one pole!
Most people are complaining about the winter here in MN. Well, I am, too. It has been so damn cold. However, we were fishing the first week of December, so that was a big game changer!
-
I finally upgraded my bibs this year. What a treat. Those raggity old carharts just werent working anymore

much faster setting up.
Interesting! Haven't seen or used one of those before.
-
Honestly, an 11" needle nose pliers with a curved tip. Long enough to fit down most pike mouths for deep hooks. The curved tip is so nice, I never even had a clue until now. It has helped me so much this year, I don't know how I ever got along with tiny needle nose pliers and forecepts before.
Here is the size and brand I bought...

But the tip is curved like this...

much faster setting up.
I pull my auger out, kick the collar away, put the auger back down the hole and let er rip. Hardly leaves any slush in the hole at all.
-
Jiffy model 30!!!!
-
I would say the Otter pro ice resort first the vexilar f18 second
-
I am going to have to say this year was my Eshimo 949i.
-
Normally I roughed it with my old eskimo hand auger,2 pole's and tackle. This summer I scored a nice condition, cheap good running stikemaster magnum 111,bought a shappell 5500 last month, built me a cheap sled and 3 auto hooksetter's and a new DB showdown will be at my step's monday...Going to be a totally different season this year!
-
Aaua-Vu 715 camera! I've only used it prepping for a local tournament in shallow water, 7' and under. I don't even turn on my Vexilar...
-
It seems like every year I always tell myself I'm set with the gear I have and I'll never need more. Yet here we are in that time of year again (and it happens before every deer and elk season, too!) when things are on sale and you see products that will just make life so much more comfortable, easy and fun.
Because of this site, I did a little researching and got to learning what people were liking about shelters and the pros and cons. I never use shelters... in fact, here's a tip: sit in your chair with the wind at your back and place your ice sled vertical on end right behind you so that you fit inside the sled and the wind gets blocked. But that isn't enough sometimes when you want to cook or warm up or be in the dark.
So now - even though I shouldn't have spent the money but won't regret it - I have an Eskimo FatFish 767i coming from Cabela's and Amazon is sending a Mr. Heater Portable Buddy with the hookups for a 20# propane tank (which I won't take fishing on the ice due to size and weight, but instead use to refill the little bottles and for hunting camp). I also scored a "Lowrance ppp-18i Elite/Mark Icefish Bag W/Transducer" so that I can use my boat depth finder (Lowrance Mark-5x Pro) on the ice! I'm excited to try this little conversion kit.
Here are the links I used in just the past couple days. Looks like the sales are still going:

-
2015 Can-AM Outlander MAX 650 xt, haven't got it out yet but cant wait!
-
Being as though I can't seem to stop buying stuff, thus far this year my best purchases have been;
Frabil 30" scoop - Really saves the back!
Lacrosse Alphaburly 1600G rubbers - Old 1200's were worn out. These new ones are sweet!
Sullivan Tip Down - Very new purchase with minimal use, but when I have used it it has worked and is just another tool in that preverbial tool box.
Aluminum Transducer Swing Arm - There is a guy on FB selling billet aluminum transducer arms for $25. Very, very nice product. Keeps that transducer right where you want it and eliminates any of the spin.
-
Crankshaft you'll be happy with the striker suit I love mine! My best purchase. a strikemaster laser pro
-
Vexilar FLX-28 Ultra Pack. I've only used it once, but so far I love it !!
-
I'm hoping my Marcum showdown 5.6 will be my best purchase. Should be here in a couple days
-
I'm hoping my Marcum showdown 5.6 will be my best purchase. Should be here in a couple days
You'll love it. Take some time to get use to the sensitivity and zoom settings...can be a bit confusing at first...but once you get it, it wonderful

Hands down my hummingbird ICE 35. First year using a flasher and it is unbelievable how much this unit has helped me. Never leave home without it!!
-
Hands down my hummingbird ICE 35. First year using a flasher and it is unbelievable how much this unit has helped me. Never leave home without it!!
Totally agree on this one. I bought one too and Absolutley love it.
-
Frabill 101 straightline 27 quicktip hand down best Gill rod I own. Northland's tackle UV glow flashlight works pretty sweet .
-
no doubt its my a marcum vx1-pro. i dragged my feet for a long time, but I couldnt be happier with it.
it's a huge help being able to see how fish respond to your presentation in real time. makes me feel like an idiot for all the days i spent dropping a dozen different jigs down a hole; not knowing if fish didnt like my jig color, my presentation, my bait, or if there just werent fish down my hole.
-
just bought a gas auger. i must say, i can't believe i went as long as i did without one. that thing cuts holes like a cookie cutter, about as fast too.
-
I bought a small airboat. It had been neglected. I imagine a permanently attatched flip over on the bow. Too tall for my garage, guess it will be ready next first ice season. I am waiting on replacement blades now. Lots of work to do on the trailer. I did have it on a ''maiden to me'' run. I may not fish much, it is a hoot to drive.

I made a crap ton of new purchases this season. I tend to miss out on early ice because I focus on hunting so much. Also, when I moved from MN to WI 12-13 years ago, my time on the ice took a nose dive. I used to have a permanent house on a metro lake and I had a portable as well. But I'm not very familiar with the lakes around my home and most of the good lakes are about an hour away. I had even traded my old gas auger for a TV after I moved. So I was only going once, maybe twice a year for the last several years. But I have the itch again and I plan on getting a small Ice Castle that I can use for those weekend trips, either here in WI, or trips to MN with friends. Also, MN allows non residents to spear, which I had just gotten into before I moved.
So, getting to my point, my best purchase this year was a Jiffy Pro-Lite auger. I'm back in full force and have been out several times this year already and going spearing this Friday.

this season i'm buying an eskimo quikfish 6. last season my quikfish 3 tore all the poles out of the walls, and one of my suitcase shelters (that was very very old anyways) had a whole wall tear off. all i had left was a suitcase shelter i'm not fond of at all, because A. the holes are way too close to where you're sitting, and B. the poles are all conduit and putting it up in cold windy weather is a total drag, both due to difficulty and cold.

-
Ryobi hammer drill for my auger. $150 for the drill (750 in/lb), 3 x 4ah batteries, and charger.
-
i picked up a couple Okuma Alaris reels and i'm totally hooked. the drag is smooth, the anti-reverse is instant, they have tons of line capacity, and i'll probably be replacing all my spinning reels with these over the course of the year.
i tend to be pretty harsh on reels. the majority of the reels i have will be used 12 months a year, every year until the reel gives up the ghost. and where i have a pretty small budget, my choice is either to buy one quality reel a year or 3 mediocre reels a year. i still have to give the Okuma Alaris the longevity test, but my immediate impression is that they're a fantastic reel under $40.
-
I got an ice fishing kit for my lowrance depth finder that I use in my boat. Nice to have a flasher.
-

-
Marcum cradle
-
garmin striker 4 kit. was a gift.

Where to start?
For the last 10 years I've been sitting on plastic buckets in a 4 man ice cube tent with a 3000btu propane heater that was difficult to light, fishing blind in 6" holes drilled by hand (or with a cordless drill if I had one that worked at the time), and once a year we'd set up the wall tent and spend a weekend on the ice which always turned into a complete gong show.
This year I went all out and built a hard sided shack complete with a wood stove, 12v battery/solar panel, murphy bed and folding table - my wife and I have spent 5 weekends out there so far this year. We also upgraded to a 10" eskimo P1 auger and bought some electronics - a Garmin Striker 5 to use as a flasher (and to upgrade the finder in the boat) and an underwater camera, so now I know that there are fish down there even if they're not biting.
I should have done this years ago...
-
Trans Alaskan boots , comfy and warm , had a nice score on 3 president reels
-
Well.. I started fishing in September so this was my first year on the ice.. kinda fell in love with it and went overboard.
Best purchases? Rods, used 3 man hub, heater, tung jigs, HT auto fisherman, vex (just bought, haven't used yet but Im super excited to have my own)
worst- BPS Auger, broke my second time using it

Bought an Eyoyo camera not sure how good it is yet, just got it and haven't been out yet.

Broke down and bought a clam plate for early ice and shallow areas.

Bought an Eyoyo camera not sure how good it is yet, just got it and haven't been out yet.
Got out today to try the new camera, made a couple changes to the unit. I spooled the camera cable on a larger spool (flyline spool) which eliminated a lot of the "coiling" of the cable. Put an elastic/tape with some "slack" on the cable/camera to keep horizontal and eliminate any direct pull on the camera cable-camera connection. Also made a temporary bar/clamp to hold the camera at correct depth and direction, I believe I will be getting a remote for it but the "quick fix" for today worked great. This particular unit only comes with about 50' of cable so you wont be fishing lakers with it, but it will work well for what I am going to be fishing with it. It comes as a great compact unit, but with the few changes I made I put it all in another carry bag I had.
Overall I was pretty happy with the unit. We were fishing a fairly sharp drop off a weed edge we located with the camera. This unit does not come with recording ability so my phone camera pics of the screen are not that great and don't really reflect the true clarity of the camera but clarity out to about 6' today was good. With larger lures/bait in this lake I am sure you could have easily seen out to at least 8' or maybe 10'. The sky was fully overcast and this was in 18' of water with maybe 3" of snow. Picked up before xmas on sale for less than 150.00 Canadian of Amazon.

This was a small marmooska hook with a small piece of worm on it, camera was about 2' away. The silver line in the middle is a clamp that comes on the camera, I have now bent that down a bit to keep it off the screen.

Lol I just got the 9inch version. Used it yesterday, water clarity was crap but the camera works as advertised.
I used fishing snaps to run my wire through.
I'll do a full review once i use it some more.
Screen is nice. Setup is easy, might add some weight to front to hold up screen, if you remove battery pack, it makes it top heavy and it falls back.
Recording my cam is a really nice option. Last night I popped the sd card into my phone, copied vids and was watching them through VLC. It's the only app that would allow me to view.

No, I saw them thanks, just don't want any pull on the cable to camera connection. Like I mentioned none of the mods I did were really necessary, the unit is pretty much good to go out of the box, I had a camera years ago and made similar mods to it.
-
Ok, and glad to hear that you like it!

Fair warning Doc: Significant assembly required. BYOB (batteries) ;)2
ive been dreading putting it together.mostly the runners .i bought heavy duty x series that are not going to want to bend up the front.how long it take to assemble?
-
Dr.Speckler , as far as your runners if you predetermine location of front of runner above bend
drill your top hole on runner and sled ,then soak top of runner where will need help bending
in very HOT water for a bit or use a heat gun . When very warn should bend much easier and then attach
front of runner in your predrilled location and bend while hot so you can continue attaching runners to the flat bottom
good luck and hope this helps

X2..also drill the screw holes a tad smaller this will hold the screws in place as you put on the nuts ..and of course put on the hyfax first before any other assembly.
-
I spent a good couple hours +. Could have shortened the process had instruction been more concise.
All the end plugs for the seat slide and tent hoops go in BEFORE attaching to the sled or brackets. Make sure you use the right fasteners for each step. Don't forget the "hammock" thingy that goes on between the slide tubes and bracket. No big deal if you forget it or don't want it (I'm still wondering if I do but it's on). That is a fabric deal in the tent bag.
Other than that I was impressed by the apparent quality of the parts and construction. I didn't get runners (should have) but a heat gun will be your friend. Starting at the front is also great advice. You'll have better leverage as you move toward the rear.
Good luck Mr. Phelps!
-
Runners? Why not just throw it on a Smitty Sled?
-
That's right, I almost forgot! I'm actually picking up skis in the morning :woot: (Thanks kayl!)
-
Runners? Why not just throw it on a Smitty Sled?
i only use my smitty sled in deep snow.bare ice will wear holes in the tub.plus my snowmobile is a option for pulling gear also.thanks too deal ninja i ended up with nice clam x series hyfax for 12$.ive put runners on shacks before but these are 1/2” by 2” wide and definitely going to need a heat gun to install them.

It took me two days to put together my X200. I do not envy you!
-
It took me two days to put together my X200. I do not envy you!
My x300 was about 2 days as well and filled my garage. Not easy to get all the tent fastened at exactly the right spot so it folds to the ice the right way.
Assemble it before it gets too cold.
-
Picked up a Panoptix Ice Bundle this fall. Used it in the boat and had it out on the ice once this fall. I think that it is going to be a handy tool.
Also a new 18ah ion battery from Amped Outdoors for it.
I can't wait to get it out and get some hours on it...
Wyo Ice
-
I picked up a new vexilar flx20 and a battery from amped outdoors for it. Now the wait begins
-
Well i have not spent a dime this year on anything ice fishing. But what i did do was successfully double my money. I folded it over and put in my pocket. ::)

I just purchased a large number of tungsten jigs, spring bobbers and 6ah battery with charger from Amped Outdoors! Best prices on jigs I have ever seen and sounds like their batteries are great!
-
This is too easy to.
That calls for a shot of Jameson. Maybe two.
-
There's the thing about buying when not needed, but getting the best clearance sales price on it. Then finding a use for it.
Shimano Curado 70 HG @ $129 vs it's $199 retail price.
(That's actually lower price vs the Shimano Curado 50E reels I bought on clearance @ $150 each. In fact that's how I bought my first Shimano Stradic 1000 spinning reel. Was on a clearance price. Back then that orange price tag was the hot clearance price vs the normal white price tag.)
-
12 ah lithium battery from Amped outdoors for my helix 7. So light, so much longer run time.
I also made a hole-hopping caddy for my sonar bag that holds 2 rods, my ice skimmer, and a chopped battery box for putting fish in. It allows me to carry the caddy, which is all I need to fish, in one hand and my auger in the other. Worked great on Upper Red Lake, it's a revelation for hole hopping while using my shack as a base for the day.

Clam scout xl thermal flip and Garmin Striker 5plus.
-
Switched from the vex fl 12 to flx 20, game changer for me so far with zoom features, also scored a smoking deal on a frabill recruit from the deals thread, absolutely love it, did ditch the boat seat and mount and am using a camping chair set in the tub for more floor space and saves weight
-
Just received my Aqua-vu 715c today, hoping it is what I want it to be. Need to wait for ice now that all ice in the area is not safe.
-
My best purchase this season was my 8" Strikemaster Lite Flite auger for $135, including shipping. I found the deal on this site. I also got a good deal on an Amped lithium battery via a group buy. Now all I need is ice so I can use the new tools :)
-
The ice kit for my Garmin. I’ve had my striker for several years on the boat and have been debating on whether to use it for ice fishing ever since I got it. Pulled the trigger this year finally and thus far I like it much better than a flasher.

I've always stuck my head down the hole. Wife bought the Striker 4 for me for Christmas. I've been reading up on line and watching videos. I'm going to finally give it a try this week. Have you used it as a flasher?
