New Member in Missoula

Hey everyone, just wanted to say hello and introduce myself.

I moved to Missoula about 2 years ago from Minnesota and I'm excited to explore the ice fishing opportunities throughout Western Montana this winter. I managed to get out once last year on Lake Placid and caught a few perch, but hoping with the advice from this forum I can have a bit more success this year. May even try to make a trip to Georgetown Lake, as I've heard the fishing can be pretty good there, perhaps even on par with what I grew up with in Northern Minnesota!

Glad to be part of what seems like a great site!

Welcome! Georgetown will definitely be different than Minnesota. But if you're into catching LARGE trout it's going to be a blast for you. Blows away any of the other fisheries around town. Plus there is a predicted winter kill up there so do your part and harvest! Once again welcome and feel free to dm me. I usually check the forum once a day.

Would you want to live in Minnesota or Michigan?

We live in one of the greatest spots in the world, and it's been discovered.

Further north for me, I grew up in the country near Bemidji. Great fishing but really cold with long winters. We actually ice fished on Memorial Day (opening fishing day) a few times up there.

Thanks all the warm welcome, didn’t expect much from an intro post, color me impressed!

Bobber - I can’t speak for all transplants from the Midwest but for me it was a combination of my wife having family in Bozeman that led her to want to live out west and the fact that I matched to the family medicine residency in Missoula for my 3 years of training as a family medicine physician.

In addition to the northern Midwest being a miserable place in winter, I like to think a lot of transplants from the Midwest (like me) find their way to MT because we want mountains and all the recreational opportunities that come with them - you can only do so much with cornfields after all.

Just took em till 2022 to realize their home states are cold, cornfields suck, and Montana has awesome elk hunting

Doubt it took them until 2022 to realize that. The last two years have led a lot of people to reevaluate their priorities, and more people are willing to make big changes.

It’s actually pretty amazing the amount of good folks here from the Midwest. They hold a lot of the same values as Montanan’s, and they come with pretty nifty accents!

I actually moved here 26 years ago when I was 17. Lived with my mom and 3 sisters. Moved out to go to auto tech school. Ended up at deisel school in Missoula. Been turning wrenches ever since. Longest place I've ever lived. So when people ask where I'm from, I tell em Montana.

As far as why people are moving here recently, just turn on the news. If you lived in some of these places and had the means to, you'd leave too. There are just too many people on this planet.

Welcome friend!  If you fish Georgetown any time soon be sure to bring waterproof everything; it's a real slush fest!  Grab a growler of beer and some sushi from Phillipsburg on your way out.  Don't be afraid to stop and talk to people, chances are you'll see a lot of the same faces consistently on Georgetown.

Welcome! I'm new to the ice fishing scene in the Missoula area as well (originally from Northern Wisconsin).  I'm looking forward to being a part of this forum and learning the lakes in the area, good luck out there!
