I was on about 10 inches in Griswold yesterday. As Menzone said, the top couple inches got noticeably softer throughout the day. A bigger concern is the edges. I had to walk through 8-10 feet of skim ice and open water to actually get onto the ice. My boots go up to my knees or I would've gotten soaked. I'll be bringing planks next time.

Had 3 to 6 right near Foxwoods last night. The 3 inches froze a lot later. Where I was last 2 weeks ago was still 6ish.

I checked a small pond in the SE corner yesterday. Still 7-8" but the top half (or more) was very soft and white. Ice thickness doesn't mean much when it's 55 degrees out. Lot of melting the last few days by the coastline.
I caught my "white whale" earlier in the week so I'm less inclined to take the risk today.

Haven’t been able to get out a lot this year but bought some bait and decided to find a good spot for this afternoon.  Checked a spot in Voluntown and another in Griswold and found a lot of white ice on both.  Took 4-5 hits with the spud to go through but I wasn’t risking it with the temps we had coming in the afternoon.  That and there wasn’t anyone else on these ponds either.  Drove a little further north and ended up in the Plainfield/Killingly area.  Had 9-10” of ice with the bottom 6” solid.  Setup around noon and stayed till dark.  Totaled 4 nice bass all 14-15” , a couple pickerel, and 4 jumbo perch.  We kept the perch to fry tomorrow night.  Weather was awesome!

I think after Thursday and Friday’s rain and the temps next week the ice will not be looking good

The places with 10”+ will hopefully hold up at least for a couple days after. If not, I’ll be driving to the hills or Mass

Ice will be fine just as it was after the last big rain we got that eventually turned to snow.  That was over an inch of rain....here in Kent a couple ponds have over 14" of ice...

It's a typical late season pattern. There will be plenty of ice around for those who look for it. I love how alot of people think the season is over after 2 days over 50. Just means more places for me to fish without an audience

Yup.  I am thankful for those types, the too much wind guys, the too much snow guys, and my favorite the its too cold guys.  Imagine if all these types suddenly enjoyed fishing as much as we do...all the spots would be slammed all the time...

I was able to make it out on Sunday night on 5-7”, after the highs, the rain, etc. I went slow, exercised a good amount of caution and found pretty solid ice with the exception of a few soft spots. Even the edges were good. I was pleasantly surprised at how well the ice faired where I was. I’ll keep going until it’s not safe but I don’t think we’re there quite yet.

Seems like weather plays a role in everything we do outdoors good and bad, but just gotta role with it and do what you can. I know it was cold Monday and making ice where I was.

It’s not just a big rain though . It’s a big rain followed by almost 5 days above freezing temps

I applaud the folks thinking cautiously. No fish is worth it.
I found bad ice last Friday so I accessed the lake from a different area. Main lake had 14" of solid ice. A guy fell though Saturday morning were the bad ice was. Thankfully, from what I heard, he was OK. Just lost a bunch of gear.

i had close to 10 yesterday but even with that, i cut a hole every 10 feet just to make sure.
my advice- if it looks bad, it probably is and not worth it.
if it looks good, wear a pfd, and cut a hole every 10 feet or so. we will get some melting today and tomorrow.

be safe- no fish is worth taking  swim for.

Cutting holes frequently is ok but I never leave home without my spud bar. Once you learn how to use one, it's by far the best way to know the quality of ice you're on. Plus it's way faster than drilling
Title: Re: Ice conditions - a lot of standing water and melting.
Post by: John Pavao on Feb 17, 2022, 05:07 PM
word of caution, my local pond had a LOT of standing water on it today. I didnt go out on the ice but I suspect we lost a bunch in central and eastern CT. Be careful out there.

There was a lot of water on the ice when we got on this morning planned to fish till sunset .. around 12:30 I noticed … there was no more water on top of the ice . I told my buddy it’s time to go . It lost integrity very quickly today

The warm winds tonight and tomorrow could really do a number on the ice. I do think some spots with 10”+ should hold up but definitely will be exercising extra caution this weekend. Cold Friday night and Saturday will hopefully sure things up a bit for Sunday.

Good luck and let’s not go swimming

The ice I was on late today lost about 2" from mid-day yesterday and tonight will be rough on it. Still should be fine on areas that were really solid before, especially once it cools down again.

About 5 or 6 inches of good ice under about 2 inches of rotting, granular ice at Lower Bolton today and the bite was red hot for panfish jigging. The fish were definitely responding to the coming weather change. The fat lady is getting ready to sing for that area I think.

I drive by Beach Pond yesterday on our way to breakfast at our favorite dinner and it’s wide open on the main body where it was fishable 5 days ago.  Hardfloor said it first!  We took what was most likely our last ice outing for the season in the killingly area.  The same pond we fished last Sat on 10+ I lost 4-5 inch in 2 days.  I would guess that pond will be shot too in another day or so.  We went out with a bang though with lots of action on bass 13-15” and a few more jumbo perch….Good luck to those who keep at it while there is still some ice around!
