Why fly reels?
« on: Dec 31, 2010, 04:19 PM »
What's the biggest advantage to using a fly reel?

I can think of only one atm.  Reduction of line twist.

I am asking about them because I want to eliminate jig spin.

I know a quality swivel will help but I want to further reduce the spin when I stop jigging.  I find the shy fish prefer to strike when the lure is completely still.

I use very light jigs and spoons btw.

jig spin is not your friend at all. you want to control the movement and it should be able to stay still to get fish.

You are right, but the reduction in line twist/jig spin is a HUGE advantage.  Watch while sight fishing or on a camera - panfish will NOT hit a spinning jig.

How do you typically use a fly reel?  I have never handled one before.

Is there a drag setting and is there anti reverse?  If not, how do you set the hook and pay out line when the fish is pulling hard?

Instead of a flyreel, why not use a small baitcaster? Same principal isn't it, no line twist.

it is hard to explain, but give it a shot, it feels great in the hand, fights fish well, and as mentioned aboce the line stores better on the reel. This is my first season with one, and Im really loving it

I set up 3 rigs last season with some of my older spare fly reels.  I was pleased with the performance down to about 20 feet and shallower.  They seemed to take a long time to drop in most of my perch holes of 30 to 50 ft.  I'm too impatient to get it back down on a hot bite that I just switch to a spinning reel and switch back when it slows down and presentation becomes most important.  I don't use the drag on the fly reel because I like the tactile contact of palming the reel on a fish. The cheapest stamped metal unit will do the same as a machined high grade alumanum one. I mean, thats all a fly reel should do anyway, is hold line.  Large arbor reels are nice but I just tape over my fly line with hockey tape and fill with a hundred feet of ice line, this gives nicer large loops with less memmory.

I can imagine there would be some pluses to it.  I'm not about to tape a $250 fly reel on a $20 rod, lol.

Not making fun of schooley.  It's just that is basically how it started.  A plastic spool vs a high grade aluminum spool.

I bought a bunch of ice fishing gear from a guy this year that included 3 schooleys rods, 2 had the plastic reels that come with them, the other didn't have a reel, but had a spool of 2lb ice line just like you get it from the store. Good idea, and an easy way to change line.

Sounds good to me for shallower water light jigs w/no jig spin.2 questions-what line are you using and what if anything are you using for rodholders?

I used fly backing as my backing and 2ft of asso line as the leader. I have three different styles of rod holder and it fits in none, so when it use it is not usually my deadstick but my jigging rod

i just installed a fly reel on two rods and like the no coil that drops the jig and also jig spin is at zero with a lil if it's a fast retreave.
i have been fishing 10-28 fow and sem to like them so far but you just can't open the bail and drop your jig you have to turn it down . not bad  but like the others said at deeper might be a pain .
i backed both reels with dacron then put on about 40 ft of 4 lb test .

i would go lighter but am afraid that with gloves on i won't be able to feel to palm the reel to help slow down a runner .
best of luck and i like em .

Scott
