That's it,,I'm building a shanty-any suggestions?
« on: Mar 15, 2003, 01:16 PM »
I will take all advice for a few months that I can get before I start building a shanty this summer.  This site has been nothing but great this winter for me so I have great expectations from this post.

Thanks in advance to all who help.

One thing I don't like about fishing out of a shanty is they appear like they stay where you put them.  What is the easiest way to make them mobile.

Looking for any plans and any ideas you may have to add to those plans.

i built one similar to this     http://www.fishontario.com/ice-fishing/buildahut/workshophut.html

more links  http://icefishingtheoutdoors.com/shelters.html

the easiest way to make them mobile is to  install skis   or make skis  with 2x4's laid on their side  and then chishel out the center 3/4"  of the 2" side of the  2x4, and screwed in  1/2" emt conduit  if you have any questions let me know

I am looking for more of a wood house type shanty then the tarp kind.  But thank you for your input.  You must be able to fit quite a few guys in the one you built.  How does the wind affect it?

I built a shanty similar to the Fish-Ontario design.
4' X 6' floor has room enough for three.
Light weight is easy enough to pull by hand.
Had the shanty out in 20+ mph winds with no problems at all. I used two spring loaded ridge poles to keep the sides tight.

The only adjustment I will be making is to the tarp material.
I used a cheap blue tarp which lets in too much light.

Mine is 4x8 7 feet high.  I can fit 2 Very comfortably   with the fold out nylon chairs with arm rests and feet kicked up on buckets,   or 3  comfortably with buckets.  As fot the wind it handles best when the wind is hitting it straight on the wood ends. We almost lost it one day whent he winds gusted at 25 - 35 miles per hour. I used a regular thickness tarp that is brown on the outside and green on the inside,  and it realy keeps the heat in.  I had a few flurries in the shanty this winter from condensation forming on the tarp, freezing and then being knocked off by the wind.

When I built my shack, I used a shed-style roof and put the door in the middle of the taller side.  It's only 4' by 8' for easy transport. This lets people enter and exit without tripping over each other.

i built a 4x8 rounded style with a door at each end and trap doors in the floor. you can fish 3 people and 6 poles very nicely. check out :fishontario.com. that is where I got my idea from but I modified the plans to fit my needs. cost about $100.00 to make.

Hey, Da Fish,

To ease dripping of water and icing on the poly tarp (due to condensation) in a portable shelter... simply drape a cotton sheet or blanket across the poles and enjoy a dry floor and no water down your neck.
