Title: Tip Up Maintenance
Post by: tipupflag on Mar 07, 2010, 09:35 AM
Whats the best grease to put in the tip up tube?  How do you get the grease into the entire length of the narrow tube cause I can't remove the trip wire?

White lithium.  Chainsaw tip greaser. I don't know if you can get one there or not, but works great.  It has small tip on it and squirts up the tube.

Frabill sub zero is what I use .  Its fluid in the coldest of weather and is water resistant .

Thanks Highsparks, I think I'll experiment with both the Frabill subzero and white lithium.

Tipupflag I'm assuming your tip ups have a trip mechanism similar to jack Traps or Heritage Lakers the chainsaw tip oilier should work. If not I believe Jack Traps sells parts for tip ups so you could buy new trip mechanisms if the oilier does not solve your problem. Also look at small gas engine shops besides hardware stores.
Jiger your Polars come apart remove the red plastic cap on top of the notched trip lever. There will be a small nut loosen and remove this allows you to take off the trip lever and remove the shaft and spool.
Take note of how the parts fit together and in what order. Once the tip up is apart use an air compresser or pipe cleaners to remove the old grease from the hollow tube the spool/trip shaft passes through when clean re-lube the tip up. this is done by coating the spool/trip shaft with a light coat of grease also squirt/inject some greaseinto the hollow tube. then insert the shaft back into tube move back and forth to distribute the grease. Then carefully reassemble the tip up in reverse order of how you broke it down.
There should be better directions and possibly photograph of how to re-lube both of your respective tip up's in the tip up forum/community .
One other lubricant to try is HT Enterprise's Blue Lube.
Here are HT's and Frabill's websites if you have to order either the Subzero or Blue Lube on-line.

You do the same thing with Arctic or Beaver Dam tip ups but you have to heat the bottom of the spool with a small torch or good solder gun and melt the solder that holds the spool on, and then re-solder the spool back on when your done.
