Drowning in Montezuma
« on: Nov 23, 2018, 07:41 AM »
Three fell through the ice yesterday and a 6 year old boy drowned. The news didn't say what they were doing, but one of the three was a 46 year old man.

Heard about that. The six year old did not get out.  :(

I don't know what they were doing on that pond, but I do know that I checked a couple of iced over ponds this past week near my office in Cedar Rapids, which is at about the same latitude as Montezuma. They had at best three quarters of an inch of ice at the shore.

That's ridiculous.  No one should take a little boy out there this early.  Idiots.

I haven't heard the facts yet.  Maybe the boy went  out and fell thru and the other tried to rescue  him.  Only an idiot would call other idiots not knowing the facts.

Lets try and avoid personal attacks on the family, we don't know all the details. Definitely keeping the family in my thoughts, what a tough loss.

There is no situation so bad that you can’t add a little bit of guilt to make it worse.

I wanted to share the story that was posted by the family on facebook.

The kids, boy and girl, were out collecting sticks to start the fireplace and the boy saw one he wanted to grab on the ice.  He went out to get it and fell through, his sister went after him to help and she fell through closer to shore(she is older and thus bigger than him).  Dad saw it I think from the house and went in after them both.  He was able to get the girl but couldn't get to the boy in time.  From what they said he was smashing ice with his fists and head trying to get to him and had to see the boy stop moving and lose his fight.  That's something nobody should have to watch, makes me feel terrible just thinking of it.

Dad and daughter are recovering, but may have some permanent issues from the cold.

I believe there is a fundraiser going for them on GoFundMe so if you are inclined I am sure they could use some support to help with the funeral and other expenses.
