2018/19 NE WI Ice Reports
« on: Nov 13, 2018, 10:28 AM »
Getting an early start this year!  ??? Let's hope the wind calms down tonight and it stays cold from here on out. Ponds are starting to freeze North of Green Bay. Riding by Shawano Lake this morn and snapped a couple pics. Lake mostly open, really looks ready to freeze. Had a report the mill pond in Laona was capped. May take a ride farther north myself to check ice progress soon.

What's cooler than being cool? Ice cold

I see one looks to be one or two partially frozen over in Lakewood....  Open water in Forest County on a few... a few have ice in the bays in Forest County....  (All larger lakes)

Took a little ride around some lakes in NE WI this morn. About 10 degrees. Saw lots of skinny ice had formed over the evening. Couple inches or so in the bays lots open water yet on the deeper spots. Real thin yet but Shawano lake looked to be capped all the way across in the Cecil bay area.

I love my Merill Chameleons! Also, let's hope this cold sticks around and doesn't turn to 60's by january.

Ha Had a pair of the gor-tex hiking which I really liked and lasted a long time. Picked up this pair of the chameleon stretch I'm not liking so much.

Fished the Bay of Green Bay this weekend on the West Shoreline @ Deadhorse Bay.  Ice at shoreline is poor and access was treacherous.

(A gentleman did fall thru).  Ice is 4.75-5.00 inches after you get 30 yrds away from shoreline.

Shoreline at the access/landing is 2-3 inches at best with melt thru pending where you walk.  (Heat retention...rocks/cat tails).  At this point experience with a spudbar is a must.

USE YOUR HEAD!  Pay attention to wind directions.... these guys got their chunk of ice lost due to a wind change that's been happening for over a day.   (Picture is from shore, they were floating away into the bay)

Volks Landing,  SE shoreline of Bay of Green Bay with a WSW wind.......  Sheriff airboats deployed and all are rescued.

Saw two people out on Silver Lake yesterday just outside of Manitowoc. They weren't out far from the ramp and right off the fishing platform area.
A week and a half ago, I was watching muskrat trappers checking their sets on other lakes and marshes in the area, with two walking across the ice, but that was before the warm up.
Looking at a few of the sets they were checking and keeping clear, you could tell that ice was building nice ..........up until this past week.

*ETA.....
A few people out on Silver Lake today, but close in. They say 5-6" until you start heading out and it gets a little thin.

Also saw one guy out on the Manitowoc River under the old iron bridge at Mill St. as I was going over it on Cty R. :o
