My First Shanty
« on: Jan 08, 2018, 09:08 PM »
Been buying pieces for the last month and scored some freebies from work. So I've spent the last week finally putting it together. Here it is as of now, it's 5x8 and gonna get metal pole building siding.

Nice start. How high are your windows? When I built mine I put a chair in and found out they were to tall for practical tipup observation.  How heavy do you think it will be when completed?

I agree with bear. They look a bit high. I’d add 2 on the other side and one on each end. Other thoughts:
1. Doors or lift out panels in floor for jigging.
2. Through bolts with backing plates on both sides between the skis for towing.
3. Wire it up now for whatever you think you may want. Lights, speakers, tv, electronics, heat, generator etc.
4. I don’t know what people do to help keep skis from freezing in or to ease with removal. Maybe wax em up good?
5. Ask what others do to insulate it and vent it.

Good job so far. Be sure to keep updating us.

I would insulate with 1 1/2" Styrofoam cut to fit between studs. White polystyrene is the cheapest and will work, but the pink stuff is more durable and cleaner. Need to insulate or your going to have condensation especially on the ceiling.

Thanks for the comments guys. I was planning on cutting round holes in the floor and using 5 gallon buckets with the bottoms cut off between the floor and ice, but am unsure about how to cover the holes when not in use. I figure use the circle I cut out of the floor but how would I keep it from falling out the bottom? I'm not a very good judge on weight but obviously I'd like it to be as light as I can while making it comfortable.

I bought bucket covers added a handle and ground the inside lip off the cover so they don’t lock down hard. Found it to work great and cheap.

You could take the cheap and easy approach and screw a dowel rod to the circles you cut out. Obviously a few more inches of dowel than the diameter of the circle.

slowly but surely I'm making progress, got the door hung and some metal on. I was wondering about wiring recommendations. Do you guys use a generator or car battery? I don't own a generator and figured I would just run lanterns for now, but am open to future ideas. Also What kind and how many lights do you run?

I use a marine battery. I️ fond some lights at Walmart in the automotive isle that are all wired for a pickup box they are leds super bright and only 15 bucks. Think there were 8 or 10 lights in the set up. Works great easy install and low profile.

Everything has come together as far as it's going to this year. I defiantly have future plans for the shack, but it's time to go fishing. I'm going to get it on the ice this week hopefully everything goes well. I should have at the very least a solid month of fishing from the shack and will have it for my annual tournament I do every year. Here she is, a little dirty but pretty solid.

Just repainted the shack today. Getting ready to go out on the ice in the next week or two. Added more insulation this year and a flag pole with the Jolly Roger. Maybe that will keep people from sitting ten feet from my shack lol.

Nice shack!!
I'm gonna build new next year.
Currently a small 7x3 works awesome for solo, 5x8 would be perfect for two.

Nice looking shack, make sure you have an ice spud hanging in side to free it from the ice if you plan to leaving it in one spot for more then a day or two.

Thanks for the comments guys. Last year I put it on a few 2x6 scrap pieces of wood so the skis wouldn't freeze in and it worked out well. I chipped out the 2x6s at the end of season of course. It's very comfortable for two guys, we did squeeze three in one time last year but that was pretty tight. I think I'm going to look for a better chair this year. Maybe a cheap office chair? otherwise we just use folding chairs.

We’ve all had Shacks.....and you will have more help than you need..putting it out. But....when it’s time to get it off the ice...in 2 feet of snow....no one shows up. I swear,we all have the same friends ! It looks great ! But I’ve learned my lesson, and now hop from lake to lake in my hub style shack...Enjoy some sleep ovahs in it.

I can understand the freedom and ease of a portable and might still add one to my gear, have any suggestions? With that being said it's pretty cool to be sitting in something with your buddies that you worked hard to make and is more comfortable than a portable imho. I love to have help and usually do, but honestly I can move the shack on my own. I work landscaping and have access to an equipment trailer that I pull behind my superduty. It's long enough that I hook the wheeler to the shack drive it up the ramps and back it off at the lake with out ever unhooking the quad.
