Ouch.
I feel for you guys. We have fished Battle for years and never had a problem. Always wondered where the springs were. Just to be safe we always used the main trail to the east when we drove out.
I went through near the outflow about 20 years ago. Fortunately it was only 3 feet deep and I was able to crawl out. Froze up instantly, was like walking with stovepipes around your legs.
I have been to several lakes this year though and from what we have been seeing the ice is really questionable. We were at Gull 5 days ago and drove out because there were at least 6 other vehicles. Punched a hole and it was like hitting an artesian well. Water absolutely boiled up from hole due to thin ice and the weight of all that snow and my truck. There was maybe only 6" of ice. Drove off immediately, went to UFA and bought a calf sled. Will be walking for a while. Gull is really variable this year with flood ice and even though it's been cold the ice has been kind of punky up at Birch Bay
Sylvan is pretty much the same at the NW end with lots of flood ice.
