Loughborough lake smelt
« on: Jan 16, 2019, 05:31 AM »
I'm wondering if anyone here has tried fishing for smelt in loughborough.

I'm pretty sure they're in there, but I've never fished for them.

Is there anywhere else in the area people fish for smelt?

I really like frying up a plate of them, and I'm sure they're better fresh.

Thanks,
Robin

They're definitely smelt in Loughborough.  Just cut open the stomach of any laker.  I've heard of people fishing for them but mostly with them.

Maybe if you jig with a bead and small hook... they often turn up on my flasher when I jig the upper column.  There mouths are really small though so I don't know how you would hook them.  Curious to read what other people say...

I've got lots of tiny hooks and micro jigs to try, I've heard of people using all kinds of things as bait. Small chunks of smelt seem to be popular!

Also people tie hooks with bits of yarn, apparently their tiny teeth can get stuck in it pretty well.

I wonder what kind of depth to try and what time of day is best. Maybe some of you have noticed when they show up on the flasher?
