Wampum?
« on: Dec 31, 2012, 04:18 PM »
Was hoping to get out this weekend at Wampum in Thornton IL. Anybody know if it has any ice yet? Looking bad weather wise after this week. 40's and rain in the forecast next week.

Try going to the Indiana site. Lots of lakes that are better than Wampum. Three rivers is at Interstate 80 and 65. Good croppie once it freezes, also all the chain lakes in Valpo. Derbies there also. Quick ride on Int 80 to get there. They are ice fishing on Loomis in Valpo.  Ed

I'm on the Indiana board all the time. Wampum is closer to me. Usually go to Willow Slough but it doesn't sound quite ready. Same with 3 rivers. Never had any luck at Lomis. Thinking about Lake Delavan in Wisconsin this weekend. Need to go somewhere before the warm up next week.

Not to many south siders on the site. I like the slough also but i like to croppie fish and that's why i chose those lakes. I caught 13" croppie at 3 rivers before. I wish we had more choices around us.

I checked it day before yesterday. It was not frozen over with two sizable areas being kept open by swans.

Fished Wampum for about 4 hours today. Was prolly 12 portables out there and at least 20 guys. Ice is around 3.5 inches but extremely clear. No snow what's so ever. This is actually a first for me. I'm used to a foot of snow on the ice. This was my first time seeing a fish thru the ice. Very cool in my book.

Swung by there yesterday January 15. A little open water, not much. Maybe next weekend if it gets as cold as predicted.

Was out there today, 6" of solid ice everywhere I drilled. Mixed bag fishing wise, signature CCFP peanut size bluegill with some decent crappies (+10") thrown in. Oh, and a 7" perch.

Wampum is over fished. alot of  Northern ranging from19''-25''. Occasional small bass. Classic CCFPD stunted bluegills. but there are some decent crappie along the weed lines.

Was going to head out there today but decided not too with freezing rain/rain in the weather report. If the forecast is true for the next couple days, our ice might be shot.  :(

Went out to Arrowhead CCFP, measured 5" of good solid ice. I didn't venture out too far though, oh and a good portion of the lake seemed to be open water. Anyway, I'll be heading out to Wampum at some point tomorrow, hopefully to pull up some potato chips  :P :( >:(

I live about 10 minutes from Wampum and would even think about going on the ice. The 2 lakes by me were fully opened up yesterday and they both looked very decieving with skim ice today. It may be cold as hell outside but with the strong winds but I would rethink your plans, jus saying ....

Appeared to be lots of open water in the AM. Didn't venture out.
