They're a pretty rare catch on here, if you're talking about Bowfin. Every now and then, a guy will have a picture of a really fat one, but they are almost always accidental. If you're talking about Eelpout or Ling, they are much more common on here, and are one of the most interesting and newly targeted food fish on here.

Used to catch them in Wis. and they are indeed dinosaurs!  WOuldn't eat them though.... :embarassed:

Used to hook into them on Kankakee River in Indiana big enough to pull 12ft boat around, we would buy the heaviest test we could get and still never boated the hugh ones.You would see them parting the weeds when the flooding would accure, searching for minnows-throw anything at them and they would grab it.Fun days years ago-probably still there.LOL

Iceman17, we catch alot of them just north of you at Huycks lake near Coldwater Mich. you ever fish here? We fish Crooked and James sometimes in May.

heard of the lake never been to it..sight fish up n coldwater... ya i live on crooked was a pound and a half away from the state record a few years ago figured i would try to target something new this year through the ice

     Haven't caught one in awhile and never through the ice but, I think bowfin are preatty cool fish. They are a primitive species that's done preatty well for themselves. Had an oppurtunity back in college to do a fish survey on a shocking vessel in WNY and we got one just shy of the state record, what a monster! I'd get a kick out of pulling one through the ice I think! ;D
