Workin on ye olde boat
« on: May 05, 2019, 04:58 PM »
I love working on my boat.
But I found something I don't like.
Rebuilding the transom sucks in a big way.  ;)

I guess it's not really that bad as it did last 28 years before needing replacement.

Yeah its a process.i had to redo mine last summer the wood was dirt.and my outboard was leaning back and the transom was separating from the boat.getting the old transom out sucked and i had no pattern so test fitting over and over.i used 2 pieces of marine plywood glued and spar urethane till the wood wouldn’t take anymore, then 3m 4200 to seal up all the bolt holes.took me more than a week but its solid now.last pic is when i started it.

I've done floors and carpet on a couple of boats but no transom yet, I hear they can be difficult.

A friend of mine used "Seacast" on his transom and swears by it.

Good Luck All

I've done three, After my second replacement a drunk driver totaled my boat, and I had to go find another one and do the process all over agian....not hard just time consuming. :-),
Again done right you will get 30 years on a boat that is left out in the weather :-),
Cheers to the repair.
Its all fun and games until someone loses a walleye.......

Proper prep is the hardest and most critical part of just about any job. the Seacast thing look pretty attractive. Pricey but way more durable than any kind of wood. If I had one that was gonna be around for more than "a while" Seacast would be a top option.

Did a couple small (14') metal boat transoms but that was EZPZ.

So far, on my glass boat, no worries at 25 YO. Actually still looks pretty good too. More than paid for itself in tourney winnings so it doesn't owe me a thing. No, I bought it "new to me" at a significant discount. Much more boat than I thought I'd ever own but the price was way too right.
To fish or not to fish? That's a stupid question!

Getting closer to having this thing done.
Marine ply core built and coated with 10 coats of clear.

And installed back into the transom.

New stainless brackets and 1/4" aluminium reinforcement plate test fit.

Reinforcement plate drilled and painted.

Stainless brackets painted up.

Should be able to get it back together tomorrow.  :)

A little closer to being done.
Covered in 3M-4200, liquid urethane and paint.
Probably take half the summer for it to wear off.  ::)

Should get the motor put back on next weekend. :)

The metal I get right across the street. There is a welding/fab shop there. :)
Wood from my local lumber yard.
A lot of my small parts, hardware and sealant from Amazon.
The urethane from my next door neighbour. He runs a glass shop.

We get a ton of Asian tourists here during the darker months.
They visit us for the Northern Lights.
They are good in town.

But even better out at the cabin. :)

Dave good job on the transom.
I used to see the northern lights quite often. Every time they predict we might see some now they never show. One night they were spectacular as they came to the center of the sky and spread a little farther. I got my boys up in the middle of the night to see them.

Just about done now.
Just have to bolt the motor back on and hook it up.
Also got a new hydraulic steering system to hook up too. :)

Motor's back where it belongs.

Just have to finish installing the new hydraulic steering and clean her up.

Now where's some open water?   ???

How was it installing that hydraulic steering? I need to do this but I'm a little beyond budget this year.

Pretty easy actually.
Especially since I have a vacuum bleeder to help with getting the air out of the lines.
I was able to bleed the system single handedly using it. Takes 2 people without it.

Got the rest of the assembly done. New seats installed and ran the motor today. :)
Still got some wiring to fix up after last summers sinking and then all should be good.
The ice went out on my lake this week too.
Got 37 days off starting in mid July to spend at the cabin.

Replaced the water pump in the ole Merc today and removed the VHF from my dash to see about getting it fixed. Seems the submersible declaration on the front of it is all lies. A few ounces of water poured out of it when I opened it up. Wonder is #ICOM can fix it?  ??? ??? ???
Might need a new one.   ::)
