Title: Quick Northern RI Ice report..
Post by: RIMainuh on Jan 14, 2019, 09:05 AM
Walked out on Bowdish yesterday, a tad sketchy with thickness but would be fishable. Waterman looks good on a drive by, but no traffic out there yet. If Temps hold, by the weekend I expect Northern RI to be able to take some Ice Traffic. I'll spud Bowdish tonight and give a quick report tomorrow.

I live on ponaganset res, most likely fishable by the weekend as well.  I have never fished bowdish, is it true there’s pike.
My old man fished a tournament there years ago and swears he caught a massive pike rod and reel.  Thought the closest place from w Glocester to catch pike was watermans.

Thanks for the update!

I will be out somewhere both saturday and sunday. Not sure where, but I will definitely be ice fishing.

Pike In Bowdish...Not that I'm aware of, however anything is possible. Someone could have slipped some in with out DEM knowing about it. It's pretty shallow so I'm not sure they would necessarily do well. seems to me Pike lakes need a bit of depth to keep them cool in the heat of the summer. I do know there are some VERY large Picks in there. Not many but there are some large ones.

Thanks for the info, I kind of suspected large pick.  My dads a summer tournament bass fisherman, so pike really isn’t on his radar.  Guess I’ll stick to the regular holes.
 Thanks again

3-4 inches all around where I spudded. If night temps hold below freezing the rest of the week I suspect early day fishing will be good for ice conditions. Might get sketchy late Saturday if rain and 40's come in.  Just be careful.

I'm going to give Bowdish a run right down at my place over the weekend. I've fished the spillway up at the west end of the lake twice last season (deepest part) not a flag. I'm fishing the causeway end down from my place on Saturday. Possible into the evening as I know there are some pretty good sized Cats in the lake if you hit them. Plenty of hornpout too. (Never caught them through the ice though). If anyone one is out and see's me on Bowdish stop in. I'll be down near Rte 44 causeway. Just down the hill from Cady's Tavern. Black Jet Sled flying an Ice Shanty flag!

Thanks for the update.

I checked one of my local spots in RI and to my surprise it had 3" of solid black all the way out to about 50' and the entire place was frozen over. I did not go any farther than that. Should be good for the weekend.

Got 2 hours in on Bowdish on Monday right in front of the house still haven't found a fish yet...Pretty damn cold I must say. I did bag out Sunday.... Lost power so had more stuff to do during the storm than I thought.

Fished Bowdish Saturday within sight of the the house. Set 3 traps while I did some work on may breakwater walls. couple bait flags but no fish. I'm starting to warm up to the 2X4 idea of clearing the weeds......Hmmmm.

That caught my eye as well. I wonder if an oar might be even more effective?  ??? Then again, not much is as inexpensive as a 2x4.

Ohh Good one I have a set in my Boat shack. The "Ash Wind" as we used to refer to them from my sailing days. Good One Eiderz I'll use that. May have to get a bigger auger as I have a 6". an 8 would give me a little more swing with it. Thanks !!!

Post by: RIMainuh on Jan 28, 2019, 01:39 PM
I grew up on the coast of Maine and the best fishing platform I ever used was and old wooden rowboat with a sculling pocket. Takes some practice to get the hang of it  but man you can get some places and fish standing up.....
Title: Re: Quick Northern RI Ice report..
Post by: eiderz on Jan 28, 2019, 02:05 PM
Only sculling I've done is duck hunting, it definitely takes practice. And you need to decide, inside or backside cup of the oar, wrist or arm motion. Big arguments to be had.  ;) Did quite a bit of poling for fish on shallow flats and to hunt railbirds in the marsh.

The railbirds have me interested.

The railbirds have me interested.

They're quirky little birds. You only get a few favorable high tides which coincide with the migration each year so it's a hit or miss thing. Very hard work poling.

Waterman still has some juice. I suspect plank and spud for the weekend and it would be fishable. Edges still look pretty tight to shore on the rte 44 access side.

On Waterman - I can only view it from the drive by but the ice is starting to get plenty white so suspect some soft spots in moving water or submerged springs.

Waterman drive by report. Edges are unsafe out to about 12' there is a very large open spot dead in the middle. Looks like unless we get another stretch of cold weather Waterman is pretty close to toast for this season.

Wilson's had 8" - 10" of ice on Sunday.  About 20 to 25 people and like 4 Quads.  Should still be good. Edges were fine.

Watermans is pretty open in the middle and along the edges on Rte 44. Bowdish suprisingly still has a pretty good batch of center ice, edges are sketchy. They closed the spillway so it's refilling for the spring. Not sure north of me.   Like Wilson's etc.
