Hooks on lures
« on: Feb 23, 2018, 05:40 PM »
So today I was out jigging for lakers before work and hooked into one 5min in had him on for a few seconds and he came in buttoned.  Felt like a big fish because when I set the hook i couldnt move it. When i got to work later on i looked at my slab rap i was using and one hook on both trebles had almost straightened and both split rings were all stretched out. The bait is new and that was only the second fish ive hooked with it.  Anyone else see a need to change the hooks on a quality brand lure like a rapala or did I just get. Bad one?

I almost always replace my lure and jig hooks with Gamakatsu hooks. I’ve had too many break or bend that I don’t trust most lure companies unless they specify that they use a premium hook.

Looks like ya foul hooked that transient, Ben. Possibly one of those whopper stick fish? I haven't used one of those slab raps, but sounds like quality split ring and treble replacements are in order?

I’ve seen hooks bend like that but never split rings... must have been a heavy fish
I just want to go ice fishing and ignore my adult problems

Cheap hooks.  My Jiggin rap rear treble broke last weekend.

"Hope" is not a good fishing strategy!

I’ve noticed the same thing and have switched out my hooks. I’ve also switched out the rings due to the fact that when I pulled down with good tension on the hook the rings were starting to straighten out..

Fresh out of the package I change the hooks on my jigging spoons , seem to have a better hook up to landing rate. The split rings I don't change unless they bad from the start,

I have broken several hooks on my kastmasters and the last kastmasters that I've bought lately don't have the split rings where you attach it to your line. They have started to supply a snap instead, just getting cheaper and cheaper >:(
The secret to fishing.....fish where the fish are.
