Title: canadice Lake
Post by: GT66PONY on Jan 03, 2013, 02:31 PM
Checked Canadice lake this afternoon,   South end froze over, most of the lake is still open! 26 Degrees! Slight wind!
If it is not windy tonight,I think it will lock up! Next week should be good! Looking forward to jigging some smelt!! I can stay close to shore that way!! Lakers will come later
                                                                                                        Stay safe,

I've never tried Canadice on the ice, but love it from my kayak. Is the road to the launch passable without 4WD as long as there hasn't been a recent big snow?

Still open as of noon today . 30 degrees    That road is plowed year round!

Good to know I can get to the water. Now I just have to hope it gets cold enough that I can get ON the water at some point this year.

Thanks.

Just starting to ice over? Looking at the short term and longer term weather, it looks like this weekend might be iffy, and the ice might be gone again by next weekend.  I really want to try Canadice, but not bad enough to risk a swim.  Hopefully, some more reports can build my confidence, or I'll be the guy two feet off shore tethered to the nearest tree with a rope!

what depth do you guys usually get the lakers at in canadice?  i've seen guys out in the middle of the lake before and can only imagine they're jigging for lakers

Deepest parts of the lake best for me for lakers.  Lakers can be just about anywhere suspended in the water column - from right on the bottom to 10 feet below the ice.  Have a chart or flasher really helps.

last time i fished there was for pickeral at the south end 10+ years ago i gotta newbie this weekend and am looking for the combo of fish and not a lot of snow to walk through with convient bait shop.  There used to be one just north of the lake in a small town Is that shop still there?  or am i off my rocker.  normally i would take him to sodus for perch but i have some back issues so i cant handle the trudge through the snow like i used to.

There is a bait shop link at the top of the page with a map.It says there are a couple 3 miles south of Conesus Ifishy.

You can also have good luck sight fishing along the weed edges using Sutton spoons or other flashy flutter spoon with no minnows.I know you have some of those.I have had great success doing that and it's a blast.

ive spent some time on the bait shop map and saw the one south of conesus if i can get a answer to my phone calles that there open than i will be fishing conesus this year i come from east of there though so its a lot of extra driving to canadaice. when i dont have the newbie and i wanna try to trout fish thats a good option.  i know when i used to fish there i would always end up pulling a pick or two up on a swedish pimple but something about flying flags and running to get them always gets the new guys hooked.  I got him into trolling seneca this year which was cool so if i can get him into ice fishing its a year round fishing buddy.

Anyone do consistently good on the brown and rainbows through the ice on this lake?   Tip ups a couple feet under the ice in deeper water or in shallower 30 to 15 feet?  Lakers aren't tough to find (getting them to bite sometimes can be a challenge sometimes though) however, I am looking to ice a brown or a rainbow.  Any help?  Thanks!

A friend of mine does very good on Hemlock with tip ups in shallower water 10 ' - 20 ' just South of the boat launch ! He gets mostly Browns with an occasional Rainbow ................ Pickeral can be a problem at times too. Bait of choice for him is bass minnows ! I'm looking to jig up some Lakers with my new Marcum LX6 probably at Canadice ! Keeping my fingers crossed we get some better ice soon !! Good Luck Huntyeraws I know you get the Lakers now go get some Browns and Bows .........  ;D

It didnt snow it rained here most of the day, just a heads up. The ice will be skecthy at best. It is snowing heavy now and its not that cold out so it might not make much more, if any ice tonight. conesus is fishable if you dont feel safe when you get there, so you dont waste a trip but as always use caution there as well, as there have been many conflicting ice reports about conesus. stay safe and good luck  :icefish:

This lake is special as there are no cottages on this lake and there are very few houses along the perimeter of the road. If you get into trouble, you may get yourself into a heap of crap real quick.  This lake drops off very fast in most spots, if you have never fished it, please use your head as no fish is worth dying for.

Again guys thanks for the advise, Have been doing this for well over 30 years and know how to handle the ice, When you are not afraid to stop on the ice that's when you get in trouble . Just got done checking survival gear. Waterproof matches,Pocket lint, boot  Spikes, Mustang, 50 ft rope, Change of clothes and a space blanket, Might even wear Inflatable PFD over Mustang. Wish me luck. Not going alone either helps too

Well Here is the scoop, Arrived about 8:30 at launch on east side. Geared up , Buddy called in a ditch, reload pull him out and back we go. Spud are way out to 68 ft. Ice 3 inch black, 1 inch crust 2 inch slush, 1 inch snow. All the smelt you want. Kept some for tip ups deployed them and started jigging. Had a flag go, Fish on. At about the half way point in the fight the line tangled around my feet. Fish gone. RATS. Hooked and lost 2 more. Ice was 2.5 to 3 inch where i was and definatly had to spud out to get there. Cold nights should tighten that slush up for you guys. All in all had good day. Left went to honeoye, Kept 15 Perch and 10 bluegills. Was out of Trident about mid lake. Good luck to all and STAY ON TOP

Glad to hear you made it out safely and had some action. I cant wait to get after them lakers, its been well over a year for me. No offense taken by any of the post, like you said we are all just looking out for each other, after all its hard to get the tone of one's voice through a screen and keyboard haha!! No one wants to hear about anyone going through thats for sure, good luck to all on the rest of the season and stay safe!

Keep usup to date Jigger would still like to hook up with you  this week if possible to try again. FYI figured out why people that fish one of the coves use pop up instead of huts. That walk down to lake sucks for a bigger sled. Help two people pull there's up the hill when i seen them struggling on my way home

I've never been to canadice before. Where is there access for pan fishing?

It's not really known as a panfish lake.  Smelt are popular targets.

The official boat launch is on the east side about mid lake.  I think the road is called Canadice lake road.   It gets deep fast here so maybe not the best panfish spot?   There is another access site on the south end of the lake and there is a good bit of shallow water there. A good number of pickeral but as I said before,  not sure how the panfish bite is.

Hopefully the ice holds.

Good luck.

Seeing as the majority of other lakes around here are now 75% open water and they had more ice then canadice i would assume it is open too.  Im taking boat out at conesus tomorrow to hammer those huge slabs.  Fish on!

This is the only local place I've heard people jigging smelt (tullibee). Are there any other lakes that have a decent, easy to catch population?
