Keweenaw Bay 2019
« on: Jan 19, 2019, 07:45 PM »
We drove by the head of the bay between L'Anse and Baraga today and saw 2 dozen+ tents between the park and the Snowshoe Priest. Anybody on here out there today? How thick was the ice? It didn't look like it was solid off the mouth of the Falls river and points east. I'm not sure how far you had to go west from there to find anything solid. We took a ride out to Huron Bay too. There were people fishing out from the A Frame or at least they were pulling away from the parking area when we were coming down the road.

You beat me to it. I was just going to ask about this. Check copper harbor today and as of now it looked like a no go.

On the bay right now. 4-5 solid inches of black ice. Colder than a witches tit and wish the wind would slow down but nice to be out. On a side not did anyone have a rod blow away? Please let me know and we can get it back to you, with the right description of course.

Anybody been out in the last few days?  I saw the bay was frozen over from Pequaming to Carla's Restaurant last Saturday afternoon but nobody was fishing out there yet.

ANY updates on the bay?  Looking to head up there tomorrow morning and am wondering what this recent cold weather has done for it.

My wife and I fished out from the Whirl-I-Gig lot this afternoon. We caught 4 lakers, (3 legal) in 260' of water. We fished from about 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm. I finally dropped my line in my tent about 3:00 so we didn't really fish too long. We had a number of flags on our tip ups, (set 6" off the bottom)  but didn't wind up catching any on them.

How deep were you fishing the burbot?  I heard they are 30-40 feet in Marquette Harbor.

How far our are you going from the head of the bay. are you going from the willows, or closer to the cliffs?

You could try squaw as well, 30-60 fow.

Lots of great intel in this thread. We’ll be fishing K-Bay Thursday-Saturday for the first time and trying to structure a plan for all-day fishing. Are whitefish and splake more reliable in mid-afternoon, with laker bites better morning and evening? Also wondering what the best target depth/structure is for the whities?

It might change with the weather this weekend but the whiteys have been almost non existent but there is a hole between Baraga and Lanse that can be good. Ive found morning and evening to be better for splake but they can be caught throughout the day. Not sure on the Lakers but id like to know as well.

Thanks for the Burbot info.  We also thought about trying off of Whirligig.

The lakers out from Whirl-I-Gig road can be caught all day. I have found that they usually hit better in the late afternoon, I almost never get out early to try, but we do get them throughout the day. We are fishing in about 260' of water so I don't believe that there is much light that gets down to them at any time of day.

We have been on foot so far this year. It is 2/3 of a mile out from the lot to where we fish and it is walkable. With the snow that we have gotten recently I am looking into picking up a used Sno Mo to ride but it is not absolutely necessary. Both my wife and I are in our 60s and I am dealing with 2 artificial knees so  I am not fond of the walk anymore.

We ended the weekend with 8 lakers, 4 burbot, 1 king and a small splake mostly in the Sand Pt area. Several forays into the whitefish hole showed they were there but we couldn’t get them to hit on anything. Best laker bite was late afternoon from 3:00-4:30 both days in 114 fow and copper was the hot color. Slush had mostly tightened up by Saturday evening but our snow machines definitely got a work out. Looking forward to the next trip.

Anyone go out on the ice today? Where? How much snow and slush? Did it blow off with the wind yesterday or did it accumulate?

Tried to go off Jentoft's yesterday. Didn't even make it half as far as I wanted to before I turned around. So much slush I could barely get traction walking out there with my sled. Not sure how much snow was out there before but it was deep in the woods and there were some small drifts out on the bay. Knee deep snow on average probably with deeper snow all over. The slush was the worst part. Saw two shacks out on the Baraga side and nobody else on the bay that I could tell.

We took a ride down to look at K Bay last evening. The lot at Whirl-I-Gig isn't cleaned at all and you can't get down into it. There was a track of a sno mo and sled that had gone out from there and I walked out a short ways onto the lake. The snow wasn't too deep for a while so I stepped of the trail and dug down with my foot. I dropped through the first layer into about 6" of slush. When I started to walk back I also sunk into slush at times on the sno mo trail I had walked out on. The parking area my the Indian campground on the Baraga side was barely big enough for 5 vehicles too.
