Little Bay De Noc
« on: Dec 03, 2009, 01:01 PM »
A group of buddies and myself are thinking about heading up to Little Bay De Noc one of the last two weeks of March to do some ice fishing. Any suggestions on a place to stay on the water or ATV driving close? There will be about 10 of us and would all like to stay at the same place if possible? Or suggestions to another fishery and nice cabin to rent for a Wed.-Sun. time frame would be appreciated.

Any idea of what part of the bay you want to fish? There are various resorts around it. If you give me a location I will direct you to the closest place.

We were thinking about renting a cabin about 5 miles north of Rapid River and driving our quads south to  a spot where we can drive on. One thing i am wondering is the fact that we have never fished here before and since walleye season will be closed, i don't know where in the bay the perch are usually caught?

Bayshore resort: Located between Gladstone and Rapid. Bait, tackle, lodging and state access next door.
Tel # 906 428 9687. They can usually give you a heads up where the perch are active.

Salmar resort: Located in Rapid River. Bait, Lodging, tackle, convenience & liquor. Located approx. 1 mile from access.
Tel# 906 474 6918.

Both of these places will get you into the northern part of the bay which is where you will want to be. I am neither promoting or recommending either one, Simply giving you 2 options which should have the location and services you will need. You may want to be careful riding ATV's on blacktop in MI. Could cost you a donation to the district court.

Can you not ride on the side of the road, even with ORV sticker? And you are also not allowed to ride ATV's on the snowmobile trails, so where can you ride an ATV in the winter, just on the lakes?

If memory serves me correctly, no operation within the plowed portions of a roadway. Yes you can run the right of way but generally snow conditions that time of year don't allow it. You should check the orv regs. on the dnr website. Just trying to keep you from getting a ticket.

This is great advice. Remember too that the State and Fedaeral Forests are managed differently as far as these rules and each county differs on what is allowed as well.

Fishing is worth it, sno-sleds are preferred and the hospitality is great. Deffinately come up and have a great time. You will be near the casinos as well and there is some great food in the area as well.

Another thought: Generally the first week or two of March it is still safe to drive on the bay with 4wd. vehicles barring any unseasonable major thaws. A simple call to either of the places i refered you to earlier will give you a conditions report. Saves pulling a trailer etc.

The bay is the bay----Some days it's action galore and others, well we all know it's fishing and not harvesting. Like any thing else, right time and place. Don't forget the solunar tables when planning your trip.

thanks for the advise Aaron. I had been thinking about the driving the trucks on the ice part. That would be too sweet to not have to pull trailers up.

Heading to the Bay all weekend. Havent fished it in a while. Any suggestions on where to go for Walleye and any Perch spots during the day?

Also, how is the ice, I am assuming I have nothing to worry about on the snowmobile?

Any reports are much appreciated. Thanks Fellas.

If you are going to be strictly day time fishing for perch & eyes I would head for center reef or the mud flats just south of it. Scatter tip ups with 3" shiners and run some #3 jiggin raps. Perch and eyes will hit both of these. You won't catch as many perch as in the Kipling area(lots of dinks) but the ones you catch will be nice.  People are starting to drive vehicles in these areas now. No problem for snomo. Reports are as usual, a few great, a few so so and lots of grumbling. If you move around you will find fish. The bay is pretty quiet this year, least amount of fisherman and shacks I've ever seen.

Thanks Aaron. I really appreciate it. Can't wait to come back home to the U.P. and do some fishing! Have some buddies coming down from Marquette and Big Bay as well.

Wonder why so few guys this year? Maybe with the tough economy, guys from Marquette, Northern Wi, etc who put shacks out and drive in for the day are not wanting to spend the money on gas, beer :), etc. Not sure.

Anyway, tight lines and I appreciate the info.

Slow weekend. A few eyes, some small Perch. LOTS OF FUN THOUGH.

Folks at Vagabond Resort in Rapid River had great cabins in a great location, real fair price.

About 14-16" of ice in Rapid River.

Searcher and 249er along as well.

The Bay has been tough this year, really working for every fish I've caught. The big thing is you had Fun. That's what it's all about. Ice shacks also make great places to hide from wives ::)

TKO.. Tried responding to your PM, but inbox full.

Vagabond in Rapid River treated us great, had Private ATV/Sled access and were very reasonable.

if you are going late, may want to be closer to Esky/further down in the bay as the ice improves, but can highly recommend the Vagabond.

PM me for more details, or I'll shoot you my cell and we can talk.

i dont think they ever stopped.....crazy mofos!   i fished there the other day    it was like fishing in the middle of I-75  trucks and cars everywhere.   some guy was driving his full size 3/4 ton pickup at about 50 mph a quarter mile from us and it sounded like he was right next to us...should of heard the crack snapple pops it was making.   he needs to watch ice road truckers to get a understanding what water does under ice at that kind of speed

That bad out there that no one wants to comment?  Or just bad enough that everyone gave up on it  ;). If anyone has some info on where and when the eyes are biting (if at all) it would be appreciated. Not looking for your sweet spot just a round about area. The group coming up is from down state so it would kinda suck to drive a 10 hour round trip and catch nothing. Thanks for the help.

I made a trip over on Tue and set up between Center and Third reef in about 27'. Didn't get out there until prime time but marked LOTS of fish with some nice sized ones on the flasher but only had one hit with nothing on the ice. They would follow the bait up to 6' of the bottom with no commitment. They are there but catching them is up to you. If we had more time, I would have went out from the Terrence or checked things out by Esky as I like to fish out there in the later part of the season. If you can stop in at bay view bait, Chris is very helpful in pointing you in a good direction. Good luck and post how things went when you get a chance.

Thanks for the advice. I'm one of the guys i'm going with grew up in Escanaba and says he knows the area pretty good. He hasn't lived up there in quite a few years though. I've been hearing the prime times are between dawn-9:30am and 4pm-dark and that they aren't catching eyes after dark. Sounds strange not to catch eyes at night, but does that sound about accurate?

That seems to be the story for time frames. Since you're fishing the weekend, I tend to think that the morning bite is better because of the people/traffic. The bite isn't as heavy as the evening but seems to be stretched out a bit longer. I like to be set up at least 45 min. before the sun comes up. From my experience, I had a sleeper up there a few years ago and very rarely would I see action after dark, when I did it was usually the rattle reel going off around midnight...

Went out Saturday all day and Sunday morning. Didn't do very well. Between the four of us Saturday we caught 3 keeper perch and 3 walleye. Biggest walleye was 13.5". Sunday was worse. Only one hit which I managed to hook, but due to my hole only being 6" I lost it in there. My buddy tried to pull it up out of the hole when the hook came out. Said it looked to be a fat 20-22".

Planning another trip maybe Friday evening, all day Saturday for sure. How's the bite going? Better than last time I hope. The ice still drivable or is it all walking from here out?
