Just wondering if anyone had luck through the ice with live meal worms?

I use them a lot.. (Perfer Spikes)..  I actually have a small fish tank in the basement and been raising them in there for several years....
The only thing I don't like about them is they come off the hook easy...
Strangers stopping strangers just to shake there hand.

Mealworms work quite well for trout. Use small hooks and thin line. Size of the mealworm may make a difference.

Mealworms are all that my fishing buddies and I ever use. They work great here. They need to be changed about every time you catch a fish, but they are easy to raise yourself. Mine sit in a container full of dry oatmeal and I toss in a piece of raw potato once every couple days so they don't dry out. I don't complain about having to put on a new worm because it is basically free bait. Also here in Washington it is next to impossible to get spikes or mousies without ordering online. At petco its 5.99 for 500 mealworms. They have wax worms but its 4.99 for 50. I just bought some to try and they only lasted a few days. I'm going to stick with the mealworms and perch eyes for now.

Deerhair jigs, 1/8oz or smaller tipped with mealworms works good for trout.

I don't know much about the superworm except that it's basically the same type of beetle larva. From what I read, they are sold in pet stores as feeder insects. The ones I usually get at bait shops are, as far as I know, yellow mealworms.

I stopped at the bait shop on Saturday to get some waxies but they were out so I had to get mealies instead. On jigs and spoons I did ok. a bass, some pickerel, perch and a few gills. The thing I noticed though was that once a fish hit the mealworm and let go(or I missed the set ::)), it would very rarely get hit again. I would have to move to a nearby hole and try again. With waxies, if I missed a hit and dropped it back down I would almost always get a second hit. I don't know if it was the texture or the taste but once it got tasted, it seemed like all the fish in that area would snub it.

If I'm fishing for trout with mealies, they are all over it. I could work a gnawed on mealie and get hit, time after time until the worm got stripped where sometimes trout will snub a waxie.

If I'm after trout I'll use mealworms first. If I'm after panfish or bass, I'll use a waxie.

I have hooked a duck in the past and a fair number of seagulls.  The Mallard fought quite well, even taking off and stripping
out a fair amount of line before I could release it.  The seagulls were much bigger but were somewhat lethargic
until they got  right up to the boat. Be careful they give a wicked bite and easily  draw blood.
