Fishing Spots In/Around Calgary

I am a student that has lived in Calgary for 4 yrs now and I am a regular Fly/Spin fisher. I have now inherited my grandfathers ice fishing equipment and would like to make a go at it. I am unsure of how to read ice to tell if it is safe, or how to ice fish. Any suggestions of where to go, general saftey ideas/considerations and ways to catch some fish would be great!
