As usual I start checking local pond temperature before Thanksgiving. I tested three of the local ponds this morning and found all of them with shoreline temp of
37 degrees Fahrenheit.
Now I wait for the first total skim ice and begin calculating freezing degree days. Every 15 freezing degree day can produce one inch of new ice.
Anybody hoping for pre December safe ice is too optimistic.
Well maybe on one of Meat+Metals "ice box" ponds.
Northern Maine might be a hope of you want a three hour drive?
I'll post a picture of the first three inches of mountain ice.
