Leaders for salmon and lake trout
« on: Nov 08, 2021, 08:07 AM »
It's my second winter in Maine and I'm used to catching brook, rainbow, and brown trout through the ice in NH.
I normally use 6lb test leaders but every fish I hooked broke off last winter. I was fishing lake Schoodic.
I had two traps with big shiners on the bottom in 100'  and fished two right below the ice.
What leaders do you guys use?

Either 8 or 10 lb Seaguar fluoro for the salmon and togue, the fish aren't so leader shy that you need smaller than that unless perhaps the water is gin clear. I have not fished Schoodic but that leader size has produced on various Maine lakes including Moosehead, Chesuncook/Rip, Pemadumcook/Ambajejus/North & South Twin and Square/Eagle. Those all have varying degrees of stained water, but certainly not muddy.

Like Eiderz, I fish the same areas.  Totally agree on Seagar Flouro (I prefer the Blue Label) and only use red Gamakatsu #6 hooks.  6 foot leader, I like to snell instead of knots, and I never put a weight on the leader.  Pain sometimes, and you have to check baits more often, but I have proven to my buddies time and again that it does matter if they are finicky.  For salmon, I would never consider using anything other than smelts. In fact, it's all I use for any trout/salmon.  Good luck

I have been using Hookmore Leaders Saltros for salmon and trout. Two packs with a size 4 and 6 hook. They also have a pile of leader options available.

My experience with various brands of flouro is that it breaks fairly easy used while ice fishing. To be honest, I only fish 6-10 days a winter but never noticed mono breaking when I had to tie on a new hook. I am also very careful about wetting the line before I cinch the knot.

8-12 lb flouro for all my tip ups for most all species (hardly ever target togue, pike obviously get wire or 40lb+ SW flouro). Never really have had issues with FC leaders breaking or weakening on my traps. Jig rods are another story there entirely. 2-4 lb mono for my jig rods, although I did try some Ice specific flouro on one of my rods last year and it seemed to work fine (despite that rod ending up being my jawjacker rod  :))
