So the last few weekends I've been coming home and filleting perch and my wife freaks out cause they are still alive... thrashing around a bit on the cardboard. Doesnt bother me but she thinks it makes me a psycho. I told her it's because they didnt freeze to death since it's been so mild temperature out. So, I took her advice and put each one out of its misery, slid the knife in behind the eye. Still after an hour drive home, each one was thrashing around...
Like I said, doesnt bother me at all but the wife thinks I'm nuts for torturing a fish.. what do you guys do when it's mild out like this?
-
fish don't feel pain just clean them
-
i aint filet nothin. guts out and fry whole
-
I love bones too ;D makes dining a adventure ,we often bet which grand child will choke
-
Ok quick story....had a great talk with a PETA person. How???can you shot a poor animal or bird and not imagine their suffering he offered. I was like ok I get it. I asked do you enjoy fishing? His reply was oh yeah love to fish!! So, I said nothing wrong with yanking a metal hook in a fishes face dragging him to sunlight and throwing it in a bucket to suffocate!!!??? 😀😀😀😀😀🤨🤨🙃🙃. Silence!!!!

Speaking of filet o fish I fish with a guy and every time we go fishing he has to get a filet at McDonald's on the way home weird?

Even off the ice my Lowrance Xc67 ice machine can find the fish 😂😂
-
Wack em on the head before bringing them in to filet.. seems humane (quick death) and will put the wife's mind at ease.. win-win
That's what I do

That's what I do
And it stops the build up of Lactic acid
-
I stick the ice pick through their head to hold them still and run the filet knife down 1 side, flip, and sometimes they still flop and cut the other side.
It's a blood sport.
Kinda like boiling a deer head today, lol

Well, it starts like this, kinda turns it a lot of stirring and scraping, beer helps. And ends like this. Smells bad, don't taste to great but looks good

-
These are from memories with my boys. I'm not getting younger so we look back at what was. Mostly it's just photographs and a plaque or frame
Sometimes I do things to save the memory otherwise, we just enjoy the food.

Mc Donald's :) ......... Take a pic of the fish, and let them go. Hit the drive thru buy 1 get 1 fish sandwich on a steamed bun with tarter sauce. Large fry and a Coke. Eat as u drive . Boom no guts , scales, fish flopping around. No smell of fried fish oil in the house. No dishes/pans/prep to clean up .
Best part is YOUR wife is happy!!!! Lmao
-
I just fillet them! And, how do you know that Trapper? Just wonderin!
Fish do not feel pain the way humans do, according to a team of neurobiologists, behavioral ecologists and fishery scientists. The researchers conclude that fish do not have the neuro-physiological capacity for a conscious awareness of pain.

If anyone is really concerned about the feelings of an animal about to be harvested then one is better off buying it in a package instead.
-
tuna strange thing is ,some people are
-
Put the fish in your beer refrigerator on the patio and clean them the next morning, they'll be dead then. I know you'll say but they have guts in them. On a 2 or 3-day fishing trip I bet you don't clean them the same day. IMOP, if fish are cool the guts in them won't hurt for one day.
Hope this doesn't open a lot of controversy, it's my opinion.

-
I like it when you cut one filet off and the fish flips itself over for you. LOL
-
If you're ice fishing or obviously have a way of keeping your catch fresh and cold, simply take any fish you are gonna keep and run a blade right at the "V" where the fishes body meets its gills. Fish will bleed out and die very quick.
-
I under stand your wife's thoughs there start abligeing her by getting a fish Billy or fish preist to knock it dead before you bring it home.. see lady's don't know life's cure it's survial of the fittest.. but since like children people imagination can run wild.. seeing people dispatching or filleting them alive so try to hide it best you can.. same thing happens to the cows chickens etc you get at grocery store problem is its already done they don't relize it happened so for your marriage sake don't flant it dispacth them before you get home.. same with childRen like little girls if they ask question like that don't make them see it could make situation worst..like turning them in to a god damn vegan...like said try to ablige best you can..
-
I cut the throats as soon as I get them off the hook. either use my finger, stick your finger under the gills and pull out the throat or just use a knife, or pliers. It kills them within a couple minutes and also you get nice bloodless fillets and also not sucha mess when cleaning them at home.
-
I don't like fish flopping around inside my hut, so I whack 'em in the head my multi-tool. I did that a few weeks ago and still had a perch flop his way towards the hole in an escape attempt. He got another whack.
-
whats the difference if I cut their throat in my ice shanty or I fillet them :roflmao: .... and you knockout every fish you don't like them flopping guess you never been on a hot perch or crappie bite .....you guys crack me up..... :roflmao: cut their throats but don't fillet them ....that's a classic
-
well you can if they don't have a central nervous system that can relay pain they can't feel it ...if they truly can feel pain why are you throwing a hook in the water ripping it into their mouth and pulling them out of their environment to die?????
-

I put your wife in my post .........as in ,,,,, Not my wife. Me and my wife would have problems then.
Best part tblaster hasn't responded.
-
There's no time for all this cutting, filleting or wacking when you have a hot bite going. Just bucket or bag them. If you don't like the sound of a fish slopping maybe you should think of a different sport.
-
;D every being can feel pain. . Like tuna said "it's a blood sport " . . We are at the top of the food chain . . Kill em and grill em . . ;D
-

If god made fish to feel pain then he would be a very cruel god indeed. Fish eat other fish.. alive. They dont whack em on the head or stick a knife in their head first. They swallow the smaller fish whole and they thrash around in burning stomach acid until they are dead. Fish do not feel pain like people. I have explained this to my wife and kids too. On a side note good luck trying to knock out or kill a catfish or bullhead before you clean it. They stay alive for quite a while even after they are filleted. Crazy tough.
-
When my grandson goes with me in the boat , he likes to give the eyes a little (Quiet Fish) with a billy from the live well , it’s U-tubed , I got some nasty grams for it ,my feelings were hurt 🤪
Ice fishing they go right to the grain bag
I just do what works for me , others can do it any way they wish

Just bite the heads off and keep fishin!!!

Holy 💩 😜

Cool pic tuna
It was a smaller striper about 22". The live bait was 12".
The 5/0 hook through the herring never penetrated the striper.
The filet knife did though

;D almost striper time . . Tuna . . I believe April 1st north of the get bridge. . ::)

They run them whole thru a Bass-O-Matic, then add chemicals to glue the pieces together and smush the mess into square molds.
-
my problem with killing a fis by beating it in the head or cutting it's throat is simple whats the difference if I just fillet it? it's just as dead and just as quick .......our problem is we see things with emotion instead of facts ..... fish don't reason such as us and they don't have a nervous system capable of feeling pain like us ......fish are one step above a salad on the evolutionary ladder ......I simply look at them with fact and not emotion and I don't feel sorry for them , they are at that point just food

Just what I needed, a great laugh, Bass o Matic, love it.
Hey, I make 2 lbs of fried shrimp, 1 lb of Haddock fillets every Friday for dinner, but some hiw I like fish sandwiches for lunch on the road, mostly at Arbys! Lol
-
Mc D’s fish sandwiches I believe are made from the part of the fish that swims over the reef last
-
So ok, with me anything in a pinch. Just came back from the store, got some Gortons Fillets for fish sandwiches tonight. Keeping in line with the catch and release policy, I will eat them tonight, and release them TOMORRIW SOME TIME! Lol ;D

I bet they get released before midnight! LOL

Every fish I'm going to keep gets dispatched quickly because why not? Bleeding them makes for better fillets, and imagining the fish suffocating to death for hours gives a weird feeling. But at the same time I've seen a blackfish swim away after it got completely filleted, and thought it was kinda funny but also sad....I'm confused.
-
No doubt they will. I have released evey fish I caught this season. Lol
-

Your logic doesn't really hold water, I mean if God made monkeys and also made harpy eagles which prey primarily on monkey- I don't think you'd deny that a primate can't feel pain... Maybe God doesn't care about all the mammals that are preyed upon by predators (or their obvious pain) as much as he cares about minnows.
I know when my red-tailed hawk snags a rabbit by the face and drives his talons through it's eye sockets it sure feels pain... but that is the natural order of things. Maybe it's easier to not think about those sort of things though.
-

I was gonna say this same thing, but I didnt want to start a huge uproar.. if you think about it, mammals and fish are far from the same thing... so that in itself could mean differences in how they "feel" or "sense" things.. clearly all mammals feel pain, some can even express emotions... I would definitely assume that, even tho a fish, a toad, a bird, etc... are all totally different than mammals, despite the differences, they can still feel pain. But it's open to debate
-
Maybe I'm cruel living in a cruel world but again some things are blood sports.
Fish are the least of my worries about their feelings. Yes, if it's a temperature critical about spoilage, I will take measures to dispatch with bleed them out quickly or I may stinger them to keep alive before I leave. I don't think about a hole I poke through a fishes jaw ( instead of its gills) to put a stinger so it stays alive and endures all that pain, lol.
When I'm ice fishing, all trout get bled out
Quickly just for taste reasons. Panfish just flop on the ice.
During hunting, If i arrow a deer with a vital shot, it is not going to get a bunch of arrows in it until it stops breathing, nor am I going to risk injury trying to slit its throat. It will pass on its own.
A non mortal shot is a different story.
Our chickens get their heads stuffed into a traffic cone upside down and their necks slit. They flop and kick until they pass. Should I comfort them to ease their pain too, lol
Come on man, put the feelings aside and the big boy pants on.
-
ihated chickens when we were kids having to take care of them one year when the old man butchered them I felt their pain ....he found BBs under their skin I had shot them with ...... I can tell you a red rider stock fits perfect to a boys behind
ps I still hate chickens
tuna your right it's food ...ya got to kill it before you grill it
-
I can remember my grand father butchering chickens chopping block and watch them flipping around , some site for a 6 year old 😜
-
I dont care what the fish feels and I'm not gonna cry about it if it's in pain. I'm just saying, it feels pain.
-
As a kid we did the chopping block method. As I learned and advanced, a traffic cone is less messy and damaging to the meat.
My son has egg layers, yeah, I been there done that. I'll take free eggs year round, I'll harvest 100 meat birds twice a year instead.
My younger grandson ( 3 years old) already is a red rider family member, 6 down, 3 to go.
Mine makes great entertainment for the indoor shooting gallery.

I was your age when my father did the same thing. Once in a while one would get it's feet under it and run 15-20 yards wide open.
-
Sorry Jon couldn’t get it to paste
Double Shooter I can remember my mom giving gramps hell from getting blood on my shirt as the chickens were doing flips , I can still see him using work horses,

Would you guys gut and butcher a chicken that is alive? Sounds like you put them out of their misery quickly.

Would you guys gut and butcher a chicken that is alive? Sounds like you put them out of their misery quickly.
My dad handles the butchering at his parent's house when he was growing up, and he never liked chicken. My mom took care of it when she was at her Grandparents farm, didn't bother her, but her mother cooked all kinds of things that my Grandfather brought home (woodchuck, muskrat, fox, etc.) There was this thing called the Great Depression going on, and they made do with what they could get. Both described the same method for chicken, grab it by the head, lay it over the block and take the head off with a smooth axe stroke, then let the chicken run around until it fell over, which meant it had bled out. Then start with the plucking and pin feathering!
-

No, that would be pretty stupid considering they would be moving around so much you could never butcher them. Fish lie there fairly still for the most part unless you hit a nice little nerve bundle... Take a look at how commercial food producers treat and butcher their animals - kosher beef especially- Talk about brutal
Either way this whole topic cracks me up, never would have guessed there'd be so many self-hating fish torturers here!!! ;D
-
I'm just saying the chicken analogy doesn't work, you are killing them quickly to make the whole process easier, which I think holds true for fish also. I fillet around the ribs so having them flopping around is annoying and they bleed all over making a mess.

I'd love some, with some fresh blood as dipping sauce.
I was just drawing a comparison, you all mentioned killing chickens swiftly, but keep fish alive all day and while filleting. I guess cutting in to the flesh of a living thing just gives me the heebee jeebies (aka a pansy). I'm no stranger to meat processing, I have pictures of deer with their brains blown out that would make peta people throw up, but they die quick usually at least.
-
I gutted a deer once and when I reached to pull out the heart, it was still beating

Back in the day when coon brought good$$ we'd skin them out as soon as they hit the ground still squirming. On to the next tree 😂😂
-
Did you take a bite?
Nah, it was pretty weird because I had feelings, lol.
I've eaten plenty of these fresh caught live though and it didn't seem to hurt my feelings at all 😀

Im not a fan of it either because I dont want to cut myself. My daughter will watch and go "gross dad they are flopping" Blackfish are the worst...they live forever.

If the filet goes into the pan while it's still quivering it is as fresh as it can be.
I remember one time I had a plate of bullheads breaded and ready for the pan and one started moving its tail. My wife freaked out.

I always give any fish I keep a whack/stab to the brain, and usually bleed them after too.

A guide buddy of mine taught me not to let them freeze (use a stringer on an ice anchor next to an unused hole), knock them out to limit stress hormone build up, and bleed them out for better quality on the table. I keep a length of pipe and game shears with me. If I know I'm keeping them, I whack them and snip the gills, then on the stringer and down the hole. Meat comes out beautiful white and they don't flop on the table.

Maybe July 6th we are looking at a pig roast/ clam bake/ chicken bbq /weekend concert at the compound when I get back from Rhode island with freshies. The other 2 are for the freezer.
Bring good vibes and a tent to sleep is all required , save those vacation days 😉
