Once in a lifetime morning (Huge Indiana Walleye)
« on: Jan 16, 2011, 01:02 PM »
Springbobber, slabgill and I headed to a new location today to try to redeem ourselves after a lackluster Saturday morining effort.  We were after perch again and the morning started off pretty good with us catching 6 keeps in the first 30 minutes or so.  Then something I don't think I will ever witness again happened.  My son (springbobber), hooked into something big.  I was about 50 yds away and could see the rod (pictured)

doubled over at the hole.  Slabgiill was closer so he went to help get the vex out and spingbobber continued the fight walking back and forth with the rod high fighting the fish.  This went on for about 2 minutes and it was still fighting hard and we had not seen the fish.  Slabgill was now videoing the action and I was by the hole expecting carp, catfish, dogfish, or large bass.  Finally after 3 minutes it swam by the hole and slabgill thought it was a dog fish...I did not see it, just the swell of water up the hole.  Another 30 seconds goes by it swims by again....I got a glimpse and now I am thinking pike by the marking.  It immediately went by again and I saw the eye and knew at that point he had a walleye...and a good one.  I had no idea how good though....another 30 seconds or so and the fish was right below the ice but could not get his head up.  I only had 4lb line on that rod (I had 2lb on it before yesterday!!!)  Once I saw the fish was played out and just sitting below the ice, I grabbed the line and eased its head into the hole and grabbed it by the gill plate and lifted it out.  We all could not believe our eyes.....Here is what came out of the hole!!!  (Sorry...had to white out the background....too many lurkers around).

We had no idea how big it was, but knew it was a trophy for sure, especially for an indiana lake!

The fish weighed 9lbs 4oz, is 28.5" long and has a 17" girth.

Here are some more pics once we got it home.  It is definitely going on my son's wall.  He fought it perfectly and certainly out did his dad today (like many other days).  BTW...there would be video too, but slabgill forgot to save it in the excitement when she came thru the hole!!

It was the craziest 3 minutes ever!!!!
We were perch fishing and I had just caught one. I went back down and there werent any more fish on the Vex. So I went to bang the bottom with my jig and I yanked it up and she was on there.  :o. This is the first walleye I have ever caught thru the ice....intentional or not. ;D

It was an amazing experience that I will never forget.  ;)

Great fish springbobber That fish would have been a hell of a fight in open water can just imagine the patients it took to land thru the ice.

With that rod I was walking it back and everytime she would run, I would have to run closer to the hole. It would have made for an interesting dance.

Special thanks to slab and wax for being my spotters.  ;D Seemed like forever, thats for sure.

Awesome spring bobber.  What a great experience you'll be telling your grandkids about some day when they ask..." grandpa, what's the story behind that fish on the wall? ".  Hopefully the story doesn't get embellished over the years, if that is possible....lol.  WTG.

way to go.......what a fish!!

the most important thing is you had an experience that you will remember for a very long time...that is way better than the fish itself...but still what a fish!!!

It's a fine line between fishing & sitting on the ice like an idiot

Great fish. 3 years ago I caught a 9lb 3ounc in a bass tourny at Raccoon. I know the fight I had in open water on braided line. Catching that one of yours the way you did is really something to be proud of. Again very nice fish.

You can keep the tips coming...we did not go to the lake you suggested.  There was only one other person on the lake we fished this morning.  If not for that fish, the morning would have sucked as far as what we caught!

All I can say is "nice, nice, nice".  That is a monster.
Fisherman's Prayer
I pray that I may live to fish
          Until my dying day.
And when it comes to my last cast,
       I then most humbly pray:
When in the Lord's great landing net
           And peacefully asleep,
That in His mercy I be Judged
              BIG ENOUGH TO KEEP.
