Synthetic light weight augers.
« on: Aug 23, 2019, 05:48 PM »
So I’ve been happy with my nils 8in with a power point head. On a Milwaukee/clam plate setup.

I’ve run a 10in mora in the ice house, and a 6in lazer for my one man shack.

With the new synthetic augers coming with a guide point, I’m thinking of maybe selling my nils and possibly the lazer and moving towards one.

So far here are the ones I know of.....am I missing any?

Strikemaster-lite flite
Eskimo-pistol
K-drill

I have the k-drill with the clam plate and dewalt drill. It works really well, the first year I had it I had trouble with it catching on the bottom of the hole. I got a 9 amp battery last year and it rarely ever happens anymore. That being said I think the pistol bit might have the edge over the kdrill since they added a point to the bits. The kdrill also has a bit of an icing problem when it gets really cold, I started carrying cans of deicer to clean it off.

Used the K for two seasons. I was very pleased last year in the bitter cold we had. I'd worried about breaking/cracking flights and that did not happen and we fished in minus 20F frequently with 3 full weekends below -25. Still, if I'm away from home there's a spare flight section somewhere close in case it's needed. Kinda like carrying a shear pin for a prop only bigger.

I did not experience the icing issue that IceAddict87 did and cannot explain that. I am going to give the flights a good ArmorAll shot before the season this year that I believe would help that. I've always paste waxed my metal drill to keep 'em from icing badly.

The light weight is really appreciated by a near 65 YO guy...  ;)2

The K-Drill 8" really drills a 7.5" diameter hole. That's 15% smaller than a true 8" hole.

Does a 7.5 inch hole matter when you are catching 4 inch fish? Just wondering?

Yes if you are in an ice castle and it's cold the hole freezes down.

Why would you get rid of your Milwaukee/nils combo? Just think of all the time you’ve spent on here talking about how great it is.

I’d stick with the nils. It’ll last longer than any of the plastic ones. And why would you want to trade off a nils for a crappy kdrill or a cheap pistol bit?

Small Perch was 3" and bigger one was 5". Brown trout puked them up when I pulled him from the water.

in my area we have really dirty ice.  its river backwaters and farm ponds.  the shaver synthetics blow away the chipper blades (kdrill) initially speedwise but quickly the chipper takes over as the blades begin to wear a bit.  I think we eventually prefered the kdrill over time.  We had to have blades sharpened half way through the season as it began to get noticably duller.  the kdrill i'm sending in this summer for the first time in 3 years and i'm not even sure they need them.

Nothing wrong with the setup, just like any ice auger. There is nothing wrong with any of them. Just board and looking to change things up.
