Deadsticking minnow for panfish
« on: Jan 26, 2022, 06:56 PM »
Hey everyone,

How do you guys hook your minnow for panfish? Single hook or treble? Where do you hook the minnow?

For me I’ve been trying single hook below the dorsal fin pointing toward the head.

Most of the bluegill I catch on a minnow are caught on tip downs. Small treble hooked behind the dorsal.

For panfish, I usually hook live minnows through the lips.
For large bait (like for pike), I usually go under the dorsal fin.

Very true!

And some days they prefer dead minnows, or even half a minnow!
I guess the moral is, if something isn't working, try mixing it up!

I usually do through the mouth and out the nare, but I do try behind the dorsal fin at times, too.  I haven't really noticed a major difference in bites or hook-up ratio.

In a hub or flip ..I keep it simple any lure ..even a plain jig ..most times I tail hook the minnow and fish it high to lure in crappie ..I have a couple rod holders that can tip down. Outside it is mostly tip downs but I have used a rod holder on a bucket .
Give a man a fish he eats for a day .Teach a man to ice fish he has an obsession for a lifetime
