Champlain 78 bridge
« on: Jan 05, 2023, 09:09 AM »
I rented a house at the end of the month to get the family on the ice and hopefully catch some perch and pike. I'm not looking for any honey holes but does anyone fish this section and if so how is the fishing. I plan on bringing my atv if the ice is safe enough. Thanks

On the eastern side of the 78 bridge there is a nice parking area and boat launch ramp for access to the lake. This is usually plowed too and any where off the north is productive for Pike and perch. Good luck.

Decent fishing up there for sure.

Anyone know what the ice is looking like up there after this warm spell?

Thank you guys very much for the info. Hopefully I'll have a solid report after that weekend with some fish caught

North of the bridge is better than south.  Watch for open watwr/thinner ice near the channel.  Do not leave valuables in your car....

If it stays cold, some bays should be good by then. Back in late December there were plenty of bays that were fishable and had guys out there as I drove from ILM to Burlington and back for work. Last week there were even some diehards on the west shore of Alburgh, but it all got erased.

I'll throw some updates on the Champlain ice conditions thread in a few days.

Is there open water from the 78 launch south?  Been fishing port henry and doing well in the boat.  Wouldnt mind a switch to pike.

Was out yesterday north of the 78 bridge. Although there is 5-7” of ice, it was noticed that there is open water (that was not there the day before). It appears to be a large area about 2/3 from bridge to the Canadian border. It is where the channel runs thru off of Donaldsons point. With the cold last night it could have skimmed over. This is an accident waiting to happen if not familiar with the area. If you plan to go out on an ATV be very careful.

Hope the info is helpful.

Thanks for the heads up Woody. Put some snow on top of that skim ice and that becomes extremely dangerous. Hey how was the fishing?

You must have been close to the launch/bridge.  I have camped on the ice there so many times and its always slow.  The faster action is north.
