Skegamog questions
« on: Feb 15, 2018, 07:08 PM »
I know there is a valiant perch population but what else is prevalent in the lake per experience of fisherman.... Does it have a walleye population and what's it like for gills if I venture around

I've been fishing Skegemog for for a few decades.

For ice fishing, Perch and Pike are the main, and almost only targets in winter.

Spear shacks dot the lake for Pike and Muskie when the season allows.

While Perch fishing, I've caught and released several nice bronze backs, some rock bass and other pan fish, but I don't target them.

I've also caught one small Walleye, a decent Brook Trout and one small Lake trout ice fishing on Skegemog.
Other than that its has been all Perch and Pike. of course almost anything could be possible with the huge river and lake systems its connected to.

Spring, Summer, and Fall holds a great Bass fishery with mostly bronze backs.
The Muskies run on the large side for those that have the skill and patience to catch them.

Good Luck all

Is there a bait shop near Skegemog that is open early (7 or so)?  I’m heading up tomorrow to hopefully fish.  I know there was a post a while back from Joe with some of the shops but I can’t seem to find it.  I’m coming from down state.

I’m assuming the ice will still hold another day with this rain and warm weather and will report back what I find tomorrow.

Thanks.  I may wait and come up a little later based on the weather reports, looks like the rain and ice may stick around a little later through the night than earlier predictions.  I’ll give them a call though.

Doeslayer - interested in if you make it to Manistee Lake and how you did. We have a cabin there and was thinking about coming up this weekend but with the rain and warm up, decided to stay for 1 more weekend.

Just got home... Dink perch at Skegemog and 0 fish at Manistee had a pike bite off my hali with a perch minnow and another pike got off at the hole on my tipup.... Blows my mind because I slaughter fish on Manistee in the summer.... Prolly punched 40-50 holes...... I'd need a day or two to find where the gills go in that lake.... There are some beefcakes in there ... Ice on Manistee was 16 solid inches... Skegamog had 12-14
