hali's and droppers
« on: Dec 31, 2004, 06:32 PM »
i fish massachusets, not exactly the perch capitol of the world, but they are still the best thing to eat out of freshwater.  what exactly is a "hali"? where can i get one? and how often do you use droppers off your jigging spoons and what jigs do you like with droppers? droppers just seem to make sense though i've never used one, saw one on the pic of the buckshot rattler.  nobody around me really goes for perch but it's my new quest, bass on tilts makes me  want to take up knitting.

Here's a good source! Try an assortment of different sizes and colors.
Perch is always a good one to start with.

i use a regular jig head no bigger then 1/64 on the bottom tipped with a small minnow. my fav colors are orange or chartreuse. on the top tippet, i use a tetr totr jig tipped with maggots just in case there are any gills feeding with the perch. my fav colors are 2 toned either pink/white or char/orange. hope this helps. i fish mostly deep water for the perch, 15- 40 fow.

i've made my order, stuck mostly with the small halis, pimples in colors i can't find, and an assortment of micro stuff.  thanks for all the help guys, hopefully be posting some pics soon.

Who likes to use droppers, not rigging other stuff above your primary jig but using a leader between your spoon and the hook, sort of like the hali's are.  i'm wondering in what intances you use them, and what kind of bait to put on them.

I got some good video of the hali's in action. I should have a chance to get it edited in the next couple of days. I'll post it here when I do.

I like fishing a dropper spoon with 8-12'' between the spoon and the hook, usually a sz. 10 or 12 treble. Tip this with a decent size minnow. The kicker is; this is attached to my Windlass tip-up. Usually it will catch my biggest perch, no matter what I'm fishing on the jigging rod. Also takes a good no. of bass as well.

got my hali's in the mail today! :thumbsup:also got an assortment of micro jigs ;D

they look just like a miniature crippled herring, i also orderd some hard to find colors for pimples.  i picked up a couple of extra chain and hook rigs that i'm going to try on the end of my favorite pimple(gold, smallest)

that idea with the spoon on the jigging tip-up sounds pisser

thanks to everyone for all the help, i'll keep checking this for more info, keep posting those secret tips, thanks

Must be from Mass.  ;)  The idea of using on a windless does sound good.

I love hali's.  They are by far one of the best bbaits for perch.  I also get many crappie and bluegill on them.  I tip them with one or two spikes and jig it.  I really like the perch colors and the blue glow hali. ;D

Ok...here they are. Not my best work, but I'm tired and I want to go to bed. ;) These are big files (3mb+ I think), so you may have to save them to view them depending on your connection.

I have a Marcum VS500. They don't make that model any move. The new (and better) models are the VS460 and VS560. I think the only difference is the VS560 has a remote for the camera pan motor and the VS460 motor has to be run at the screen. I was not in a shanty that day, but it would have made it easier to see. As with all cameras, the less light you have when looking at the screen the better.
