Trouble Setting The Hook
« on: Jan 07, 2005, 01:19 AM »
I've been catching a lot of perch lately, but I'm missing three fourths of my strikes. I'm using good sharp hooks on my lures, tipped with a single waxworm. How do you guys set the hook? I think I might be missing a bunch of really small ones. I know you should just lift slightly and sharply, but I'm still missing fish. How do you guys set the hook?

They may be just sucking the waxie in and not the hook. Like you said though, they're just the small ones you're missing and who wants them anyhow.

I just might be willing to bet that your sharp hook tip is slightly exposed....finicky perch will almost always spit if there's any indication of something not quite right....try baiting your presentation with the sharp tip just under whatever you are using....the small perch seem to be more wary than the big ones....tightlines and hooksets....Grump

Like slipbob said it sounds like they are just mouthing it, try watching the kink in your line maybe you can get the advantage on them that way, sometimes it moves way beofre you rod does.

Sharp hook with pinched barbs make a big difference.

Yeah I bet the camera would really help because I was all out of whack, trying all sorts of different ways to set the hook on those little devils. I think though that just a slow lift when a perch grabs it would be best. I went fishing for rainbow trout last weekend and had 4 bites, landing three of the fish. Different fishing for big predators like rainbows than little perch though.

downsizing works well or try something a little larger, some days that's the cat's meow. Try 22 trebles and hold on!
