  • Catch More and Bigger Fish Through the Ice!!
Real Perch "Decoy"
« on: Jan 01, 2005, 09:30 PM »
Another idea I have been thinking about is catching a few perch then attaching them to mono leaders off of a main line that is weighted at the end.  I figure the struggling perch on the bottom will keep other perch in the area.  At the end of the day simply pull up your perch and add them to the bucket.  Has anyone ever tried anything like this before?  I am going to watch it on the Aqua-Vu, and I'll let you know how it works.....

I'm not sure if a fish in distress will keep around a school of perch  :-[  my fist impression would be that it would do the opposite :-\ maybe i'm wrong.

You never know until you try.But be careful you could be flirting with regs. on using gamefish for bait.I've heard of using wooden perch decoys for spearing thru the ice.I know that usually once you start getting action the comotion will draw more perch.Let us know how it works if you try it.Maybe a small minnow trap with some perch in it would work to draw curious fish?

try hanging a big sucker or golden shiner from a tipup nearby where you are jigging.  You'd be amazed how well a decoy fish works to hold panfish in an area.  Plus, bonus northern!

Not sure of regs where u are PP but in Michigan you can use any legally caught fish to catch another fish. Perch aren't gamefish in MI and can be used for bait. It sounds like a good idea, but I would put it on a tip up just in case ;D
