11-25 jigging up the biggen's
« on: Nov 26, 2005, 02:39 PM »
Headed out to the shanty for a little fun, (can you believe we're fishing in a shanty eh?)  Stoked up the wood stove, and rigged the rods.  5 minutes later the biggens moved in and fish were everywhere!  My youngens scored around 25 or so smallish rainbows, and salmon.  6 nice char between 18" - 22 1/2", and a couple stray pike, (only a kid could horse in a pike on 4 lb. test and never break it off.)  All species were fun with those little HT buggy whips and 4 lb. test!  Learning how to fight the big one up with light line is new to them.  Can't tell you how many they missed next to the hole, (and how many of dad's jigging rapala's went with them :'()  Nice having the shanty up when it's -5 outside. :-[  Didn't get any fishing in with all the chaos.  The traditional lines crossed, hooks in the suits, "I'm hungry", "Dad it's too hot", "Fish on!", but what the hey!  Fun had by all... ;D

The "Shanty"

Boys jiggin' up the beasts!

Showing off a nice eating char, caught solo while pops was b.s. ing outside.

Dinner, tossed the rest back for another day.

Barley, I knew I was on the wrong lake. Maybe if I was in the right place I would have not dropped so much stuff thru the ice. Way to go bud.

Right on folks!  Thanks for the compliments.....  You know this age is really great to take fishing.  You guys are right about the loss of lures, it's all in the experience!  The learning continues for the future of the sport, now if they had a better coach eh! ;D

Great fishing Barleydog. What a mix bag of fish you found. It's great when you can have fishing like that, and the smiles on the boys faces says it all. :)
A few lost Rapalas means you have the chance to test some of the new colors now.
Keep up the good fishing. 8)

Thanks Grump! ;)  It's just one of those patience "things" we all learn as fathers.  Funny how I look at my youngens,  and think back how patient my pops was with me, it's humbling! ;D  They love to fish! I thought that would be half the battle eh!

Now, do you guys have any suggestions for "new" Raps?

The learning continues for the future of the sport, now if they had a better coach eh! ;D

I'm sure my kids would agree on wanting a better coach  :'(  I don't think the youngest has caught anything through the ice yet, but the elder 2 have...the little guy is usually too busy playing in the snow to fish.  I guess I can't be all that bad...they seem to enjoy it as does the boss...all of them have caught Manitoba Master Angler fish on open water and all have battled 30" channel catfish.

Derek

God grant me the Serenity to accept the size of the fish I catch,
the Courage not to fib about it,
and the Wisdom to know that no one would believe me anyway.

Right on Thriller!  My youngens did the same for the first several years.... Played on the ice, buried the fish, played with Barley, and ventured into the woods.  Suddenly, they have become competitive and challenge one another for the title of "The Days Best Fisherman."  Kinda neat until I caught them trash talking, scaring hearing a 7 year old telling his brother "I'm kickin' your butt, don't even think of catching me!"  Dang 7 year old Terrell Owens!  :D
