The best bait to use for Crappies??
« on: Jan 24, 2005, 02:09 PM »
Hi everyone, i'm new to this forum. I have been reading a lot of topics here and this forum seems to be the best one out there. I love icefishing and try to get out on the ice whenever i can. My favorite fish to catch is crappie, i use minnows on vertical jigs almost all the time. I was wondering what bait works good for you guys??  wax worms, mealworms, crickets, spikes, crawlers, minnows ????
I would greatly appreciate any replys. Thanks

Waxworms or maggots tipped on small jigs/spoons.

Politically incorrect, and proud of it.

depends on the fish in the particular body of water and the time of day...some places the like maggots, other places tiny emeralds, and yet others fatheads...never found any crappies that liked rosies though ???

overall, i have found that i cant beat a moonglow jig with a plastic tail and one maggot, on 2lb test, but a tiny struggling emerald shiner will take the biggest fish.

I hear ya, I tried rosies all day and nothing,  :P as soon as I tipped my jig with a fathead or icicle, I was slamming them on the ice.  ;D

Rosie?  Icicle?  Sorry guys, I'm not familiar with all the slang associated with bait...to top it off, I have yet to go out for crappie this winter...sigh.

Rosie are little reddish fathead and Icicles are all silver shiny bait similar to smelt.  ;)
