Title: Let's start talking ice
Post by: FishYuppie on Nov 26, 2023, 12:46 PM
Who's seeing some early ice out there....guessing Northern Iowa may have some?

Everything small in Central Iowa has been locked up for the last 2-3 days. It wouldn't surprise me if there were a couple of protected ponds that had fishable ice first thing yesterday morning with the single digit temps. A few of the ponds I saw driving around for work looked like the ice was pretty dang solid.

I think most everything will open back up today but it won't be long now.

The way it’s looking it will most likely be around the first of the year. Par for the course.

The best I can say about the current forecast for December in terms of making ice in Iowa is that forecasts a month out are never really right.

With float suit, spikes and a spud bar in hand, going to check out some of the 3-4" ice around Clear Lake tomorrow. Sure hope my next report isn't as a feature of the evening news.

Got on the ice, never ventured too far from the Reed beds though.Did manage to catch fish, but only 2 made the bucket. Won't be going out again till the cold returns and Bambi is in my truck. Stay dry!

FWIW, the forecast for the week after Christmas looks better for ice making in Iowa, but a lot can change between now and then.

Right now it looks like no more ice making for the rest of 2023.

Well I'm glad I got out a couple times earlier this month. Looks like we should have new ice in Northern Iowa early January. Fishing was good the couple times out, mixed bag. Hope everyone is ready to go the next couple months, I know I am! 😁

Found 3" of solid ice in central Iowa but it was very inconsistent. Had to be diligent with the spud bar and observant of ice conditions.
Managed to get my first fish through the ice this year. Freaking carp smoked my jig and plastic. Boy was that fun on a power noodle.

Let's hope this snow gets blown off the ice over the next 48hrs

Finally! Good ice has returned. There's some sketchy looking ice out there, but the good stuff is building underneath. Might be tricky when it becomes late season. Good luck till then.
