Title: Flaming Gorge 2019 (final trip pics added 3-14-19)
Post by: muskyon46 on Jan 09, 2019, 08:00 AM
Its that time of year and the date has been set, the emails are out. Check you inbox's. January 25-27. Right during the burbot bash for those wanting to enter. The ice reports I'm getting makes me think we will be in the south buckboard/big bend area this year. I will have more info after this weekends scouting trip. Get your stuff ready for the 2019 sleeper shack showdown on the gorge  @)

Right back at ya. As the saying goes "Birds of a feather flock together" Our crew of ice heads is only as good as we are to each other.

Ok so Biggest pup went 24in. Good end of day with some sunlight, Had light to moderate snow most of the morning. Found an average 4.5in good hard ice everywhere we went towards the cliffs in big bend. Hopefully will be good to go in 2 weeks, with thicker ice.  2-3in of snow on the ice right now in big bend. Might melt down this weekend with the predicted temps

Did our part to bring home a couple limits. What a great end of day on the gorge.

Thanks for doing a recon trip! I appreciate knowing what the conditions are so that I know what to bring as far as gear goes. Sounds like a hare’s ear nymph in a size 20 was the ticket. I am hoping that the snow sticks around.

Thanks buddy! Hit record on your phone and I will be your first subscriber.
I will probably head down on Tuesday or Wednesday. My accountant asked me to go to Nelson reservior in Montana this Friday through Sunday. Even Joe has obligations boys! So, when I get home from all of that work, I will turn and burn down to the Gorge. Still waiting to see what the weather looks like and the snow situation before deciding what gear to bring.
As far as fishing rods go, I have been looking into procuring the equipment for such a task. The “Hut Bomber”  (24”-28” Ultra Light) will probably be the first in a lineup that will include many other companion rods named after the boys of winter. Stay tuned and keep your eyes peeled!

I hope this storm blowing in isn't as bad as they are predicting. I am driving down to Denver on Friday and then back Sunday. Fishing somewhere around here on Monday then going to Jackson on Tuesday and then hopefully heading down there with you all on Friday. Lots of traveling is the point so I hope the roads hold for me.

Joe I may have to start taking my old go pro along with me I just don't think it will be all that compelling to most.

What day you heading out?  Let than joe the rest of us will be the Thursday afternoon until Sunday afternoon. I'll get some maps out before the weekend. Man if you start filming im going to have no choice but to look into a go pro. Can't let all you guys get all the fame

Maps are out, check your inboxs. Hope it works for everyone. With the way the roads are sounding this year being pretty drifty and the storms predicted before we head up, I think Rd.8 is our best bet for access. The ice could be better for sure but its solid and should be just enough by the time we get there. I had no probs going from the parking area down into the start of the cliffs on my bike last friday where we want to do some camping/burb slaying. There was just enough snow on the ice for wheelers and sleds. I still cant decide what I'm taking yet. With the storms coming in, the sled will probably go better than my chained up 2wheel drive bike. We'll see   ???

Matt I am not 100% that I can make it down yet but if I do I would like to be there late friday and leave late Saturday spending friday night on the ice with you all. I just got my sled put back together and running so it may be a decent first trip out with it. No more of that doubling up crap we had to do on Cascade last year. Hopefully I put it all together correctly lol.

Thanks Matt ! Was wondering if you think I can get the 5th wheel down to the camping area? With this new storm maybe I should stick with the snowmobile trailer.
Title: Re: Flaming Gorge 2019
Post by: muskyon46 on Jan 17, 2019, 09:03 PM
You would be able to put the trailer at buckboard with some hook ups and ride over to where we are on the wheeler. Not that far away. I wouldn't take it down rd8. The road was pretty beat in and iced over. Wouldn't want the mothership sliding off the road. Definitely worth watching the roads up for sure with new snow. Im only seeing a small chance on Wednesday and Thursday

For Gale and whomever else finds this handy on their travels to the gorge north end. This is all the WYDOT cams from Evanston to past Rock springs on the NWS website. Once on there you can change it by Interstate, state route ect....for other places in the state. Good stuff

What a great trip this year, just wish the catching would have been half as good as the company. I would have to say this was the worst catching weekend I've ever had at the gorge. I did manage 2 cuts, which was a 1st for me there & 2 pups. The ice conditions were pretty nasty when at got there but it firmed up good by today with only a few slush pockets around. I'll get some pics up soon atleast the few I took

Sounds like a fun trip! I tried to find you guys Saturday morning but I didn’t see an obvious shanty camp with all the people that were around!!! After driving around south buckboard for a bit I left to go find some big fish as I had buddies heading out. I’m glad I did because I tied into the biggest ice laker of my life! Next time we need to get you boys on these guys! Once I knew I could get out to this spot safely I couldn’t think of doing anything else lol.

Thae footage of that sideXside is crazy. I thought it was the red 4 seater that was parked on the shore but thats definitley a different machine. Here's some shots i took thru the weekend. Nothing to fancy but I spent so much time working those fish on my finder and not getting them to bite I didnt get time for much else. This is how our parking ened up along with the other 4 trucks inour group that showed up later. Plenty of snow on the ground for sure. The road we wanted to take was blocked by a toyota truck that parked right in the middle of the road, I just dont understand what people are thinking some times.

Had a great time with the gang at the Gorge! Joe you should have seen the one that broke off at the hole on your lure! Darn the bad luck ! What a trip....... lost a bag of poles, had skid marks (not mine) on my sheets at the super 8 and had to move, had a warning light come on on my truck and had to have it checked out, and had the big one break off at the hole. All and all still a great trip ! Ready to plan the next one, who wants to go to Cascade ?

Definitely to heavy to be going on the ice at that spot. There was open water just to the west of where they went in. You can see it in the video

Screwed up a piece of wood to the sled and then just used the bracket that came with the finder. Just using a lead acid battery for now. I had a cigarette plug, but it was a pain on bumps for losing power and rebooting the unit. I primarily use it for mapping, so power consumption is not much of an issue.

Thanks Joe I have been thinking about doing the same thing with mine out of the boat just so I can use the maps I have made in the summer. My old ice unit is too old to read the autochart live maps.

What unit are you trying to read your maps on? Have you checked on available software updates? Humminbird is pretty good for those...

Joe my ice unit is an old ice 385ci that I have had for years. To my knowledge the only way for it to read autochart live maps is for me to buy the pc program and convert their format where all of the newer ones I can just put the chip in and it works. Right now to get around that I just sit down in my boat with both running and manually put in a bunch of waypoints in my ice unit to get me close. Works for the most part but is time consuming.

Shoot me some ideas for what you guys would enjoy in the future please. Heading up to Buffalo Bill reservior in the morning with Dad. Should be good for catching if we don’t get blown off of the lake!

And on Saturday we went after the big boys and they didn’t want to play so hopefully in about a few weeks we’ll be able to try for them again. It was good to see everyone up there and also it was way cold sleeping on the ice the temperature was-11 at 5:00 in the morning

Was a great time on the gorge yesterday. Couldn't have asked for better weather, of course after the sun came up. It was chilly as my truck read -10 when we hit the ramp. Only 1 pic for me of the sunrise as all of us drew the skunk at getting something on the ice. Plenty of marks big and small all thru the day. The morning fish finder action was the best for sure. Big thanks to pok3 for letting a few of us hang out with him for the day and get some good pointers on hooking some of the big boys

Hey I wanted to thank POK3 as well, really appreciated the time he spent helping us get set up and after them... Not sure I've ever seen as many chasers without once wanting to dine... Well guess we paid our dues maybe next time we'll put one on the ice... J

Hopefully it’s better in a couple weeks. I’ll try my best to make it out there fishing with you guys!

Matt, you better take a ride up to northern Wyoming. It was minus 28 this morning and I'm sure it will be well below zero again tonight! Ice will be around for awhile.

Man is this 47yo body getting rough to take on these ice camp trips. Lol. It was a great trip. Weather was way better than predicted. Fishing for burbot was pretty hot. With a few toads coming in at 30in. Lakers were only marginal for most or non existant for me. Some did well on them but no hogs just pups. Ice in anvil was easily 13+in, the pressure ridges were the only place you had to take your time around as they were starting to open up. Edges were holding out good also. I'll get some pics up tomorrow. Great last camp trip everyone. Here's a teaser of my burbot take the 1st night which was by far my best night

Ok so it took longer than expected to get these up as the last trip really got my body out of whack. I was stuck on the couch with some awful pain going on in my back and neck and thought for sure I blew another disk in my back but after a trip to my chiropractor this morning I am hopefull he will get me staightened out. I ended up having both my hips shifted forward 1 also tilted in, 3 vertebrea out of alignment (2 back-1 neck), 3 ribs misaligned, right colar bone disconected and my right shoulder blade tilted in the wrong direction. MAN I'm a mess but it all comes with age I guess. I wont be needing to get an MRI, yet! but in 2 weeks I'll know for sure. Worst news is my ice season is probably done  :'( :'( but anyways enough of the whining. The trip started out like a dream, got the stuff unloaded and it was pretty much t-shirt weather from the get go

Tighlines everyone and keep posting the trips you get in as there is still access to the berry from chicken creek, the ladders and the soldier creek side off of hwy 40

Matt,

I 100% hope you mend completely.  And as to the rest of whats left of this ice season, I think I'm done also.  Went to Mantua today and caught 5 perch all over 8 inches, 1 baby bluegil that is still swimming, and a nice fat 15" rainbow.  All in all, not a bad day to end on.  So, I bid y'all ado and look forward to some more adventures next season.  Take care and tight lines.

Title: Re: Flaming Gorge 2019 (final trip pics added 3-14-19)
Post by: muskyon46 on Sep 05, 2019, 08:07 AM
Well to be honest not many of us were very happy with the perfomance of the bobber looking bubblers. They do have their place as something to use for short time as they do chew thru some batteries and they all dont work the same as each other. I have 2 that work good and one that barely puts out any bubbles. The best ones I've found are these

https://www.amazon.com/Marine-Metal-Aeratr-Bubble-1-5V/dp/B000EYULIS/ref=sr_1_2?crid=1INJK25N35R8T&keywords=bubble+box+aerator&qid=1567688442&s=gateway&sprefix=bubble+box%2Caps%2C391&sr=8-2 (https://www.amazon.com/Marine-Metal-Aeratr-Bubble-1-5V/dp/B000EYULIS/ref=sr_1_2?crid=1INJK25N35R8T&keywords=bubble+box+aerator&qid=1567688442&s=gateway&sprefix=bubble+box%2Caps%2C391&sr=8-2)

There is a few other brands you can find for around the same price. They run on 2 D batteries and last a long time. I rigged my bubble line to some thicker gage wire to hold it in the center of the hole. I place the bubbler in a waterproof type bag to keep the chill off of it and all together when packing them up. Skyler put more rigged tubing on his and it serves the same purpose. Here's a video of them in action at Henry's last year with the jigging jacker
