minnow trap for smelt?
« on: Nov 15, 2007, 08:45 PM »
just wondering if anyone has ever tried catching smelt in a minnow trap under the ice?
Can I go fishing? Unless it’s on Brant, I can’t.

From what I understand its next to impossible, I'm sure someone knows a way to get them in a trap. My understanding is they primarly feed on zoo plankton, but the contrary to that is I Jig them up all the time on tiny sweedish pimple's so go figure. Maybe the trick is to make some automated traps with sweedish pimples jiging inside them.

I have also heard of this method.

"I wait. Now the night flows back, the mighty stillness embraces and includes me; I can see the stars again and the world of starlight. I am twenty miles or more from the nearest fellow human, but instead of loneliness I feel loveliness. Loveliness and a quiet exultation." - Ed Abbey

I've dumped a couple cans of cat food down a hole in the evening and then gone back the next day and hammered the smelt.  I like to use a hali-jig tipped with a spike.  Almost as effective as trapping them but much more fun.
