You gotta push down hard on the cheek to get the eye to bulge. Then just slide your thumb under the eye get it about halfway  out then use you index finger and you thumb to  pull it out.Voila

There is a technique you have to develop. But there is also this actual tool that I have seen that is used to take out the eyes. It looks like it would work pretty well.

I have seen the tools they are just a small wire loop on a handle that you scoop under the eye personally I just slide my hook through the eye and give it a tug they usually come right out sometimes they rip but thats why theres 2 eyes on every fish ;D

I reach in thru the gill and push from the inside using my index or the middle finger the eye will bulge out and way out then using the thumb on the same hand push your thumb nail under the eye and the eyeball will come out after a little practice all you need is 1 hand do it

I'm new to icefising and was just wondering what the eyes are used for? Seems cool if they are useful for something. Less waste of the fish.

They are an excellent bait. Other perch just love them. I just slide my thumbnail under the socket from below the eye. Pops right out. Don't forget to keep a couple between your cheek and gum so they don't freeze.

Ive seen times when this is the only thing that will work on perch the hardest part is catching the first"donor"

I found if you take an old bike spoke and bend it in half then bend the last inch of the spoke that you just bent at an 45 degree angle (so it looks like a little scoop) works really good. it is also very cheap. A piece of thick wire would also work :)

PerchBuster & the rest,

A simple paperclip opened at one end for a handle & leave the other end to form & all you gotta do is scoup...

And it fits right in your bait box...

     Tight lines...

You can use a spoon like a daredevil. Just hold the widest part of the spoon and use the top to dig 'em out.

I live in upstate NY and was wondering if there are any regulations against using Perch eyes in NY. Sounds like a great way to save money on bait. Thanks

A kitchen tea spoon works good, large enuf not to lose, small enuf for the popping.
A cotter pin works good too, but basically anything to get behind the eye and pop
it out will work. Sometimes the fish are too small to pop out an eye with your thumb!

Looks like there are all kinds of ways to get the job done.  I used some on 1/2/06 and had good luck on Perch.  Wonder why the Perch don't go after the eyes still in other perch???

I just use my hemostats.  Enter around the perimeter of the eye, pinch the nerves connecting the eye to the brain, and pull.  No problem, and it leaves tantilizing nerves to dangle on the "dead stick."

I just use my hoof from the jig I'm fishing with, stick it in, twist one full turn to breal the optic nerve, then pop it out and it's all ready for the hook......no extra stuff to lug around....

Here's a way I've found to store them for "next time" so you don't have to wait for a donor.  I place them (well separated) on a sheet of wax paper placed upon a pizza pan or cookie sheet and put them in the freezer.  After a couple two or three hours, put them in a ziplock bag like so many peas.  That way they don't freeze up into a mass.

Might upset a few wives who may be squeamish about such things though  :woot:
