Splake in Turquoise?
« on: Jan 15, 2018, 05:30 PM »
Caught this guy in Turquoise on Saturday. Pretty sure it's a splake, not a laker, based on the pattern on the top of the fish. Sorry for the bad pic but was going fast to get him back down the hole. Am I crazy? Is this a splake?

I can't be sure without seeing the tail, but it looks like a laker to me.

Looking at the top by the fin looks like tiger trout pattern, but could very well be a laker.

DrCro that's what made me think splake. It for sure had the forked tail like a laker but the top looked like a tiger trout. I caught a laker right after that and it didn't have those patterns on top. The tail was all laker though. CPW doesn't list Splake in that lake but I know there are some lakes in that area that have them.

As others have said, the tale is in the tail.

Not my photo, but an example of both next to each other.  I'm not so sure the coloring is the best way to hint at a splake.  I've seen young lakers with more mottled "camouflage" patterns on their dorsal side.  The fork in the tail I think is the key for lakers.
Flags up, gentlemen!!!

Dang I wish I got a better picture. Probably a laker then. I remember the tail being pretty forked. It definitely looked like a lakers tail but the coloration on top had me thinking Splake. Didn't look like any of the others I have ever caught.

Without seeing the tail like everyone else said I would say it's a Brook Trout.

Dont think to hard about it, 95% chance its a juvenile laker, just of the darker variety.  The color spectrum on lake trout is pretty broad, and the few I iced from turquoise the one time i fished it were very dark.   Best part is youll never know so oh well!
