Title: Rods for Ling
Post by: winston6wt on Feb 23, 2015, 10:32 AM
Making my first attempt at ling this week and I don't feel like my gear is heavy enough. I'm set up for pan fish and small trout with light and medium rods. I know ling aren't known to be ferocious fighters, but what do I need to pull them off the bottom?

Medium rod should be fine.  I typically use slightly heavier get, but not really necessary.  Might want to up the line to 10 lb braid or flouro if you have lighter line on you reel.  I typically use the same tackle I use for smaller lake trout, but it's really overkill.

Only exception would be if you plan to fish in the middle of a boulder field area.  These fish will bury you in the rocks if you let them run, so make sure you can horse them in if you're fishing over that kind of structure.

Thanks twolights. Looks like I just have to bump my line size up.

I caught a bunch of ling and some pretgy good sized ones this year using medium action ice rods with 6 pound test. Never broke any off.
