homemade spears
« on: Feb 03, 2010, 12:09 PM »
I finely decided to make a spear.  What is the diameter and lingth of the points on yours?  What is the spacing between points?  I am thinking of using 1/4" "oil hard" drill rod for the points and welding them into a 1/2"x1 1/2" block of cold rolled steal that has 1/4" holes drilled 1" deep to accept the tines.  For a handle I plan to use 3/4" or 1" pipe welded and bolted on.  Will this be strong enough? I have seen how a large one can straighten out the hook on a gaff in the summer so I want to make sure I don't under build my spear.

I am also concidering using a gardenfork or manure fork. Just heat it up to straighten the curved tines and chisel in a barb then re harden it.  I have to look at them first to see what the cost is and the spacing on the tines.

Let me know weather you think eather of theese ideas will work.
