Title: Quad registration
Post by: mjgonehunting on Jan 08, 2014, 12:05 PM
Does anyone know Maines ATV registration law?
I can ride on private property and onto lake ice adjoining w/o needing registration. Only need it to run on state/public land.
Is Maine law similar? Can I run on my own land and out onto the lake to fish ?
Lacking a  title for an older quad so don't know if I can even get it registered!

I belive that the State owns the body of water 10 acres or larger which make them public. I suspect a ticket or two if not registered on a lake

Your not allowed to ride on private property without permission. As FS said the lake is state property so it would need to be registered to ride on a lake.
And, belive it or not, the ATV would also need to be registered as a snowmobile if it has tracks  :cookoo: as well as reg as a ATV

That is correct, a lot of people aren't aware of that twist in the registration laws.

No title needed in Maine for sleds and 4 wheelers.......just a bill of sale.

As others have stated, it will need to be registered.

Thanks guys.
I'll have to hoist it up on end and try to find the frame
numbers.
I got it from a friend who never registered it,and lost all the paperwork when his basement flooded.
I only use it on my own property and at my hunting camp which is private also,so hadn't needed to register it before. It's a 1996 so the dealer records are long gone too if he had to go back to there for proof!

Does Maine require insurance on them?
In NY we need it to register.

Only true if you are riding on a groomed snowmobile trail. Out on the lake an ATV registration is all that is needed.

Maine Warden Wade Carter gave my son a warning for not having my 4 wheeler registered as a snowmobile while fishing on second Hadely lake in East Machias. He told my son "If your dad was here he would be getting a ticket"
Thats where I got my info. You could be right but this was my experence.

I'll be hitting the town hall before I take it out!
Don't need to be checked out in front of a Northwoods Law camera!
My wife already had those honors, but it hasn't made it to air so far!
She was one of those dangerous criminals without a life preserver In a paddle boat!

I've had tracks on my Ranger the past 2 seasons and been checked numerous times and there has never been anything said about a snowmobile registration. It's no wonder there is confusion about the laws in this State since the ones enforcing the laws are just as confused as the rest of us.

Well, maybe you got checked by a leo that used some common sence and relized that at least the Ranger was registered.  :callcops:

If you own a Argo with tracks and drive it into a pond you need 3 registrations for the Argo. Boat,ATV and snowmobile  :roflmao:  :cookoo:

I know it's hard to believe but, sometimes they don't tell the truth.

My wife knows someone through her job that has an antique car ( I forget the brand but I've seen them on tv) that was sold as a car that converts to a boat, and they need both registrations here in NY too!

We had Kim Plex tracks. No trouble at all. I belive these were made around 2000-2002. I only had a 400 Forman and it worked hard but worked out very well. I sold them for 2X what I paid and put the $$ toward a Bear Cat

I know, isn't that crazy....that's why I haven't taken mine out in the water.  Just boggs and small ponds >:(

Was the machine registered as an ATV?  Did your son access the pond by a snowmobile trail?  You only need the ATV reg as long as your not on a snowmobile trail.

Yes it was registered only as a ATV. Most of the trails in this area are ok for both ATV and snowmobile but ATVs only if there is no snow or I belive it reads "not groomed" maybe

Not if you paddle the Argo  ;D.  Soon if you have a hitch bar on your jet sled they make you register it as a trailer.

Aside from the state sticker are there any Limington trail stickers needed if I want to ride the trails around that area?
Some other areas where I have snowmobiled have required town trail permits for groomed trails.
