Is there anybody going to Fernan this morning and know what the ice conditions and fishing is like? The last 2 times that I have been out there the fishing has sucked.
Heyburn State Park: 1/19/2014Ice at 47.373797,-116.761163, Chatcolet Lower Rd Launch, less than 1" and broken in spots, did not fish, dangerous ice conditions.Ice at Rock Point, 47.355426,-116.749902 . 5" of good ice, little sketchy at the boat ramp to the end of pier.A lot of small perch, must have ice 40-50 fish, all smaller than 4" others were catching slight larger fish.Went out from long pier in 6 to 16 FOW, best action for small fish in about 12 FOW, switched to Swedish pimple silver with glow sticker hooked onto a large fish that got off. I was tipping with wax worms and white spikes. Good reports for pike, people getting flags daily at Rocky Point, I think that's going to be my plan for tomorrow.
Perch Roe - I am a big fan! I prepare the roe the same way that I prepare the fillets. I toss it in a light corn flower with my spices then pan fry it. I grew up eating the roe of any of the fish I caught though and it's definitely something that some people do not enjoy.
Sounds like a lot of the fish have lockjaw this year anyways I got the new Vexilar Sonar Phone T-POD last night. The guy at Cabela's recommended it and said that's what their "marine" guy uses for ice fishing. Hopefully it's a good buy. Anybody ever used one before? I'm excited to try it out!
