There is water on the top of the ice. We were walking in 1 to 3 inches of it.

So are you thinking the fishing is over at Clear Lake, or just the driving out?

I don't think the fishing is over but I won't be driving out unless we get some cold soon.
Time to break out the portables I reckon. Be careful out there.

I heard the DNR advised not driving out there two days ago. I went out yesterday and pulled the shack off so it didn't get frozen under 4" of ice. As I was driving off, someone in a big dodge was loading up and driving out. If the temps get down into the 20s like their supposed to, then I think driving will be ok for a little longer. For now the Yellows are still biting ok if your in the right spot.

Your right Cesar there is water on top of the ice. I must have had a brain fart when I put "no" in my sentence.

my big dodge made it out. theres still alot of ice where the shack used to be its just opening up along shore. And there are some smaller holes open up in the middle of the lake. one of the tires on the shack dropped in but it pulled it right out.

Thank goodness for brain farts. One of my usual ones would cause "ice out" for sure.  ;D

Has anyone ever seen 30" plus of solid ice go to sh_t so fast?  I'm talking in a few days!!  My ole man & I were just out there last Thursday because we knew the big melt was coming & didn't want to sit in water. It was as solid as I had ever seen it. I cannot believe how fast this happen!  Use your head & don't do anything stupid.

Good question, I'd like to know that as well.

----

My questions are....

Can you get on from the shorelines/landings? (By foot is fine).

I was contemplating a trip there this weekend - expand my horizons - and maybe even catch a fish or two.

I know there is a bait shop in Clear Lake - can anyone provide the name/address/phone number?

Thanks much

The ice is running anywhere from 22-26 inches.
The drive up landing by Deadmans Curve is frozen mud and rutted up pretty good although it is drivable with 4 wheel drive. There is a little rock walk down landing at Deadmans thats pretty nice. Not sure on the condition of the Farmers Beach or Bayside Accesses.

If you are going to come up, don't plan on catching walleyes, plan on Yellows.

I made the trip to Clear on Sunday afternoon. Got on the ice via Farmers Beach (a stop at the Crazy Minnow got me the directions). Was setup by about 3.30-4.00.

Not sure if I was out "far enough" - there where alot of shelters / vehicles out much further than I was. Had about 7 FOW under the ice. Had yellows start showing up off and on between 4.30 and 6.00 - then it got to dark to see them on the camera. They were very skittish - move the lure at all and they scattered. Tryed a jigging rap & a buckshot rattle spoon (both tipped w/ a 1/2 minnow). Had a tip up out as well - one hit on it, but no one was there, minnow was gone.

Once it was dark - I swapped the tip up for a minnow and bobber - one hit on it - way under - but didn't notice it as I was busy trying to swap spoons - and when I did see it, what ever there was gone. Did catch 1 small walleye - about 10" long. Had some lookers come in, but nothing else would commit.

Alot of vehicles were comming off the ice between 6-6.30, so I assume no one else did much either. I packed up about 7.00.

Still a couple feet of ice. We took two trucks out to our shack tonight from farmers beach. Easy goin. It;s pretty flat now. The ice was cracking loudly with the winds. Not that normal ice building crack but loud ice cracking type stuff. I think the wind is moving it around.

I have been back from a trip to lake Vermilion in Tower Mn and some other spots for a few weeks now, even at that time most of the areas I fished were not all that active, did catch some perch and one throw back tulibee up at Tower....The one day I did try to fish on Clear lake it was way too windy and cold with no shelter so I was not out there long, hope I get to try again next winter.

Went out wed. afternoon 4P.M. wind was bad. Many yellows, plus 5 13" eyes, to small as usual,1 2#cat. Ice was funny when we went on. Left about 6:30 P.M. Really cold then. Ice turned to glass.went on at the north pump house. Some foul dropped garbage through ice and it came floating under us as we fished. discusstting!!! :(

How's the ice?  I am thinking about one last trip this week.  Are people driving quads on it yet?

Thanks!

I plan on going out tomorrow (Thursday) is there anything biting?  The plan is to go unless we get a bunch of rain or it is still raining, (don't know if it is still in the forcasst) we should be arriving around 5.
