Help with walleye fishing please!!!!
« on: Jan 26, 2010, 06:54 PM »
Im lookin start fishing for walleyes at night. Possibly trying to go to oneida this weekend for night time outing. What depths do you guys try and stay around? Are you setting tip ups and jigging right off the bottom the majority of the time. Also what kind of jigs do you guys use for eyes for the most part. I have never really targeted walleye and would like to start doing so more often. Thanks for the help in-advance.

I set up exactly the same as I do for Pike.  Anywhere from 2' to 15' or so. I set up about 2 1/2 - 3' off bottom. They are usually right on bottom but the way their eyes are on their head they are looking up and out a bit. Plus it keeps the bait from getting tangled in the weeds. I don't jig much but Haley's work for anything in my experience. On my tip ups,  I use 30# mono for a liter with  a #10 hook. I place my small splitshot about 8-10" above my shiner. Hope I could help.

when running tip-ups for wally's just before dark and into the night, find your drop-off area ( my area is 8'-20') don't run them from deep up to shallow, run them right in the middle of the shelve between the shallow and deep points running your tip-ups close together, I go with a buddy and we put out 10 tip-ups in about a 25' area....drill all your holes well before you are ready to fish...I usually drill a few extra holes next to my tip-up holes in case I get a wally on one of the tipups I'll have a hole to jig out of....remember that wally's school up also, so if you get one there are more to be caught, and also dont think you will limit out everytime out, you must put in a lot of time to get those eyes....hope this helps you out, here are some eyes from the same setup I've listed above...icepike26 out
