Gear lube
« on: Nov 20, 2005, 12:37 PM »
I have always taken my ultra and micro lite reels I use in the summer and just changed the line and used them for ice fishing, they have always worked fine with no problem.  Last winter I bought a reel and each time I went out ice fishing the gear lube must have started to freeze up because it was rather hard to turn the handle.  I bought the same exact reel this summer because I like the way it feels and handles in normal conditions.  Does anybody have a suggestion on which gear lube to use to prevent the freeze up, I have never had to replace the lube, so I have no idea what to really look for.

Hey 66, I usually dont mess with that stuff because I dont use my summer reels in the winter.  But I have encountered some problems in the past.  I use white grease.  Dont know if I am supposed to but that is what I use.

White lithium grease is pretty good stuff....
I use the 80/20 rule you need 80% of the tackle to catch 20% of the fish

Hi Gang!
I just use light oil and clean all summer grease off the reels.  If a reel starts binding I tear it down and re-oil it.  No grease and litho grease will freeze  but it does work.
  My 2 cents worth.

When you say light oil, is there a specific brand?  I don't want to just go buy new lube, oil, or grease to only have the same problem occur.

HT's blue lube is supposed to work well in the winter, I just use quantum hot sauce...best reel lubricant out there.

Hi Gang!
The oil I use is regular reel oil in  the tube with the applicator end.  A 3-in one oil works but the quantum red sauce works too.  Usually I just recomend sewing machine oil.  Its durable, stain free, odor free, and last along time.

Thanks guys, I bought the Quantum Hot Sauce today.  The first reel went smoothly to relube, however, the second reel is more than likely going into the trash now.  After putting it back together the anti-reverse no longer works, I put the reel together and took it apart about 10 times with no luck.

I have had that happen to me with the cheap micro quantums and the pflueger medalists.  Not that it's the reels fault (at least in my case it usually isnt :pinch: :-[)

Well the reel I had problems with is a Quantum Xtralite XL00S2, I realize it is cheap, but I have had it for a long time and up until now have had no problems with it, this reel actually gave me no problems in the winter with freezing up, I guess you shouldn't try to fix something if it isn't broke, but I was just trying to do a little preventative maintenance to relube it.

My problem is that I have big hands and fingers which makes it hard to work on such little parts, I have this problem with working on computers, cars, and now I guess fishing reels.

I have had it for a long time and up until now have had no problems with it, t

Exactly how I've killed'em.  I don't get it.  I can completely disassemble&reassemble a casting reel and most other spinning reels, but those little buggers are just killers.
