Ice Fly Swap
« on: Dec 25, 2010, 10:44 PM »
I have participated in these on a site for salmon/steelhead so I thought I would try it here.

What: A fly swap among ice fishermen...because it's fun! You'll get 12 different great flies back from fellow I.S. members

When: Due January 9, 2011 (have it posted by that date).

Who: First 13 people to respond with all tyers welcome...experts and beginners...  I've heard alot of great things about wax worms and a-bombs flies so I will leave a spot open for them if they would like to join.

a) Tie 12 of the exact same pattern ice flies. Great chance to 'nail' that tough tying pattern you've always wanted to master
b) put a small paper toetag on each fly hook with your name
c) mail them to Me, in a small protective container like an Altoids tin or similar, by the due date along with return self-addressed envelope. The Post Office sells perfect envelopes that are great for the swap. They cost .39 cents. I usually have the postman weight my two envelopes and Altoids tin and he puts the postage on. I just buy $2.00 in stamps to cover the return envelope.
d) I will sort all the flies into 13 groups of everyone's unique fly
e) I mail them back to you in the same container you sent your flies in
f) you get 12 great new flies

I'm obviously in, we need 11 others.  Come on guys this would be a good opportunity to get some new ideas on flies to tie.

I am really interested in this.  But I am just a rookie.  My flies are no "A-bombs" I can tell you that.  I am in if there it comes down to needing one more guy.
I used to get excited about a 20 inch bass until I caught my first 40 inch dolphin.

I'm in also .  My 12 will ready to go by the end of the week .  I have a question if 13 people are doing it why only get 12 flies should be 13. So you should make 13 flies.

Im in.   Question though.......  do they have to be true flys?  or can they big jigs for ice fishing?   I tie a little of both sometimes.  For example I often like to put some polar flash or krystal flash on a tear drop I paint.    Would that be considered part of the swap or not?    I am in either way.

You only make 12 because you do not make a fly for yourself.  You send out 12 and get 12 back.  Not as good of a response as I had hoped for.  Lets let this go a few more days and see if anyone else seems interested.

You may want to shelve the idea until next November.  Right now, alot of guys are fishing in their spare time and not tying flies.  I tie most of mine in October and November while waiting for the ice.  When the ice comes I want to fish, not tie flies.  Like I said, if you get 13 people, I'm in.

OK we will stop it at 10 people.  Tie up 9 flies and have them in the mail by January 9th.  You will not need to send a fly for yourself so just tie up the 9, unless anyone feels like sending me extra for doing all the sorting and running them back to the post office. ;D.  I will PM all of you with my address.  Dont forget to send something to put your flies in when I mail them back and please make sure you have enough postage to get them back to you.

Wax we should all do it again next year ?  Maybe we will get more people .  I know that people come up with new thing to try every year.

I will do this again next year before the season starts.  When guys have the itch but there is no ice yet it can give them something to do.  November is a good time to be on the river chasing steelhead, I think that July is a great time to tie flies. ;)  I'm having problems with downloading pics to my computer otherwise I would post the pics of the flies to help others see our ideas.

I reckon I am to late. I have spent countless hours developing a lure that will maintain a horizontal position, and yet when flutter jigged only the head will move.  Ok I got lucky on my fourth attempt.

Just for off the water and read your post. Sounds fun i tie floss and lace flies although u don't paint hard bodies or use tungsten beads. It would be nice to see other creations and ideas. Maybe I'm lucky13?
Feels so nice doing it through the ice

jgj and swisscheese I would like to let you in but I already have some of the flies here and others already have them in the mail.  Would not be fair to the others as we would be short if anybody else were to get in.  If guys seem to like this and want to do another you can get in on the next one.
