Pike Central USA - Lake Champlain VT
« on: Feb 17, 2019, 05:33 PM »
Made our annual pilgrimage up to Vermont this past weekend for some pike fishing. We got excellent bait and a daytime shanty rental from Gilly at Martin's General store. We slept over in North Hero at Holiday Habor. This is the best of both worlds in my mind. A warm bob house in the daytime and a hot shower and place to cook at night.  We arrived Friday and were lines in around 1030am. We had a good mix of fish up to 10.5# for pike and a few largemouth in the 2-3 lb class. We jigged perch in between chasing pike flags. We ran 40 traps between 3 guys. Over 2 days we iced 48 pike with Mark's 10.5# taking lunker honors. Food was stellar with ny strip steak cheese and onion subs, fried bacon mac cheese nuggets,  buttermilk fried chicken and biscuits, French onion soup, sausage egg n cheese breakfast sandwiches.   Overall just a great trip.

Flags up!

Good luck Jeff. They are biting,  at least where we set up anyways. Allot of others said it was slow.

Heady and sip of sunshine are great beers. But the next time you're up this way gotta branch out, VT is spoiled with amount of good beers we have here. And good job with the pike too!

Tree House tends to follow me around when I fish local waters. Some new releases just came out.

Now that you mention it he had some treehouse also but, since I don't drink it I didn't notice which variety.  Great times had by all.

Good luck to those heading up soon.

Nice work.  I was up there Saturday as well in South Hero.  If I was a perch fisherman I would have called it a banner day but we were hoping to get into some bigger fish.  We fished east of Kibbe point in the inland sea.  I had the pleasure of navigating my first pressure ridge so we could get to a decent depth.  We had traps set from anywhere from 5-40 feet of water with a variety of bait sizes.  We only caught more perch on the tip ups.  I'd say I prob caught around 100 perch jigging and another 20+ on tip ups with the biggest perch pushing 11 inches.  We stayed busy but would have liked to get something other than perch.  Glad the northerns cooperated for you!

If you are a fan of Tree House style beer then you need to go to Foam Brewers.  They have a nice little spot water front in Burlington.  Since TH moved to Charlton their quality control has gone down hill.  The last couple Haze's I've had give you that throat burn that overly hopped beers can give you.  I never used to experience it with their smaller batches from Monson.  IMO Foam's beers blow TH out of the water.  Between Lawson's, Alchemist, Fiddlehead and Foam you've got some of the best beers in the country right at your door step.  For those that aren't into that style of beer, Long Trail and Switchback are also excellent choices.

Great!! Taking the boy up to the NY side in a couple weeks... got a place right on King Bay. Never fished that side but if we get half of what you did I’ll be happy!

I completely agree with your statement. I have not tried Foam but will now. Also to add to your list, trillium which is 25 minutes from me. I think they were just ranked best in NE.

Wife and I visited trillium while we were in Boston two weekends ago. Awesome beer, terrible wait. Place was ridiculously packed, which I suppose speaks to the quality of the beer!

Went to the Trillium Beer Garden down on the seaport in boston before a red sox game this summer.  I'd have to agree that they are quite possibly the best brewery in the state, I'm not sure I'm sold on NE though.  Soooo many different options now.  The VT board said that Four Quarters is better than Foam so i'll be adding that to my list to try as well.

And while you're in Winooski you might as well go by Waf's Westside Deli and get yourself a steak and cheese and some waffle fries!

Just learned they distribute to a couple of my local beer shops.  I'll be stopping by to see if they have any in stock.
