Was wondering if there was any ice in the bay and if if the bay was still posted with the no parking signs. Wanted to go up this weekend. Can't seem to find anything on the conditions page.
Thanks
-
If you look up youll see the sponsors. Click on Chaumont Hadware and youll see their number. Give them a call and they will usually know as most guys fishing it buy their bait there. Good Luck. :icefish:

Chaumont bay is froze in spots very very variable conditions. You can find some ice in the 3 inch to some 4 inch range. also you can find open water cherry island towards long point, and along south end of 3 mile point as of yesterday. Ice was broke up along edges yesterday 3 mile point south end. North end very very soft ice found the most ice to be 5 inches 0-10ft water but it was all soft white ice not all to promising or safe you could watch it move as you walked across it. most black ice found was about 2-3 inches which quickly went to less in spots.
-
It's gonna be sketchy until this wind dies and the temps stabilize.
-
Look up guffin bay resort they have ice conditions there. It's right around the corner from chaumont
-
Thanks rippem ! Can never have enough bookmarks for ice fishing !~!

Chaumont bay has the worste small mouth fishing in new york ;D

Sucks for perch and everything else to!

I know there is enough ice to fish but I don't know exact totals

I know there is enough ice to fish but I don't know exact totals
I respectfully disagree.
Monday there was only 2-2.5 inches anyplace I checked, and that was junk snow ice.
We had strong south/southwest winds the past couple days, pushing the water up in the bay.
Today, we've got strong winds out of the north.
The ice (what there was) was fractured and cracked all over the bay by the winds and wave action.
I would not recommend even thinking of fishing here until Friday at earliest, and Saturday would be better still.
Given the nature of the Bay, plus limited parking access points, not to mention some relatively inexperienced fishermen flocking to "good" ice, my advice is stay home another couple or three days.
I'm intentionally NOT posting on the BW/J thread for this very reason.

Thank you for your reports through the years and appreciate your honesty especially this year with sketchy at best first ice conditions.

I disagree as well.
Being that there has been NOBODY fishing. I ventured out yesterday to be the first out and the last out for awhile. The ice was NOT good.
The Entire lake from part of PT. Salubrious to Cherry island, to Long Point, around the South side of Three Mile Pt. is WIDE OPEN WATER.
Go for a ride and look for yourself.
What Esox said is 100 % accurate.

essox is the ice keeper of the bay. He checks it regular. If you've been out there fishing, then you have probably past him or even met him without knowing. He's a good honest guy that won't steer you wrong. He's probably on it today, so look for a report tonight in Big Water Jefferson in conditions.

Looks like this is going to shape up to be a good old fashioned jarhead vs. squid throwdown :woot: :woot: should we set up a grunt vs. swab jockey fish off?

I think I might have mentioned this last year, but in case I didn't:
You and the other swabbie go and find yerselves another half dozen swabbies, then the odds at 8-1 will make it just about an even match....lol.

What's fellas not sure who any of u are but I wish everyone the best of luck this year n stay dry.. Was up to chaumont today and ice was good in guffin bay but fishing was EXTREMELY SLOW!!! Ice was 4-5 of black ice with some spots with white ice. Also went to three mile bay ice was a little sketchier there but still had 3-5 inches of black with some white mixed in fishing was a little better but still very slow. Wish I had some good fishing to report but at least there is some decent ice.

Ground pounder/ Professional Camper and a few others. Air Force...Wingnut. My brother retired from the Coast Guard...he had to wait 2 yrs after he graduated from High School to get in...wasn't able to meet the minimum height requirement of 6 ft....reason for that is so that if your little boat goes down you can walk to shore...

Hey now... ;D This ole knuckle dragger got lucky and left with all ten fingers...even learned to count to 21 without taking off my shoes and socks. Ever since I fished the bay this year for a couple of bass tournaments I have committed to coming up and giving the hardwater a try....if it is even close to what the smallie fishing is like all I can say if whoa ;D ;D
-
Chaumont is now the VFW thread!!! ;D Chaumont is really fun to fish when the ice is good for sure...a little intimidating with questionable ice because you can go out miles and miles...the Perch are large, the Pike are large, Walleyes will surprise you and there are other fish that lurk out there that can change your day...I hope she freezes up good this year!
-
do ya'll think the ice will be decent this saturday?

You saw a pic of that 12 pound eye I got last winter...my goal this winter is to make that one look small, and I've got a good idea where to go and make it happen...

when we go up there we pray to get on the pike or eyes... we can only seem to find the perch

If you're on the perch, the eyes aren't far away...caught most of my eyes last year on my perch rig....
The biggest problem most guys have is they're using the minnows for the perch (either because they're money fishermen, or they want the quick catch) and in that haste, lose the technique needed to catch the big eyes.
-

unless your fishing perch in 3 feet of water :P

come on who uses minnows for perch?!? :cookoo:
-
Hey did anyone make it out today to check the ice and or fish? I might head out tomorrow but am wondering how the ice is and if the bite has improved since Sunday. Guffins and Chaumont info is appreciated. Thanks.
-

not a single soul, but i hear some trophy gill fishermen do lol
-
Minnows for perch, there are walleye up there?
-
not a single soul, but i hear some trophy gill fishermen do lol
I've caught gills on fatheads 5ft below the ice in 20ft of water on tip-ups while trout fishing I was in shock!
-
hahaha lol, ive caught 8 inchers on 7 inch senkos while fishing for bass, always surprises me how they get them tiny mouths around a size 4/0 offset worm hook
-
When you find perch in 3 fow up here, let me know.
last year i spent every day at that depth and got what i wanted. if you show me some walleye spots i'll show you the 3 ft perch spot.
-
Fished guffins today saw a couple nice pike caught , perch fishing really slow ice 4 to 6 inches.
-
is there any other access to Chaumont other than the chaumont boat launch?
-
You can get on from the park. Just before the launch. A little closer to rt.12. Plenty of parking. Sometimes this access is much better than the launch, it doesn't get all broken up by machine traffic. Just respect it. :)
-
Well enough of that.....I called my parents who have migrated to Florida for the winter and told them to shut the window that's letting all the warm air migrate north. Next week looks like temps in the teens hope it locks up good and solid. I really want to get up there and try it out. Who knows maybe we can start a ice chapter of the VFW ;D

depends on what you define as "middle" of the bay...
-
Esox you cannot be a former jar-head...I thought once a jar-head always a jar-head...this stretch of cold should do something good, you didn't get any snow up there did you?
-

NO snow.....none, ground is bare., and I'll be a gyrene pretty much forever....I may not still wear the uniform, but even 30 years after the fact, I can still fit comfortably in them...
Whens yer leg gonna be ready for a hoof out to herricks shoals for some big walleye?

Stay Home, It's a VERY LARGE BAIT FARM.....There is a guy named Marty, that lives up there and he knows where the HOG PERCH are... ;D ;D ;D ;D

Very close...I am going to try at some close spots with short walks this week...
-
Esox, sent you a PM
-
Getting ready, here waldo here waldo ;D ;D and not going to the Bait Farm.
-
the whole bay is open water.
that's not good... hopefully you don't get any lake effect snow up there and get some calm days and nights
-
like a 3/4 to a mile off of three mile point
-
I have been searching everywhere to find out if there is anywhere to park now. Just finding old treads. Has anything been done for the parking? Used to like fishing there but havn't in some years now.
-
I see alot of issues with parking on Chaumont bay. I have a place on the bay- my recommendation is to get your bait at Chaumont Hardware, then drive to point pennisula state park. Lots of parking, easy access to bay, and a nice protected cove which does not get all broken up by the wind. There are weed beds in there and this spot normally holds nice perch. Please respect the Bay though- pickup you trash when heading out.
-
Just don't go toward the point lots of current, ice does not get thick there.
-
Might head up that way this mourning. Hows the ice?
-
go to the top of the page and click on the chamount bay hardware ad, they give a great ice and fishing report, good luck
-
My cousin, uncle, and I have a trip planned up to Chaumont for Thursday, Friday, Saturday... was wondering how the Pike bite is. My uncle would like to get on some pike (me and my cousin want walleyes but we'll settle). Last year we fished Sawmill and didn't find any. Then the next day we headed out toward Johnson's and found some perch but no pike or eyes. Looking to be point in the right direction to get on some decent pike fishing. You can send me a pm if you don't want to post on here.
Thanks

read gregs report was wondering if there was any sleds or wheelers out there today
I was out there today. Rough day! Caught about 40 fish kept 9. I was with Boggey and he did about the same. Bite was great in the morning and just died around 12. There were sleds and 4 wheelers out there. I was on around 6" of black. Today's conditions aren't doing the ice any favors. By the time I left there was almost a foot of snow and the wind was hollowing. Had to have been 35mph plus.
One last note I have to give it to Boggey he was the only man amongst us boys. He sat on a bucket the whole day with no gloves. At one point as I was huddle over a heater shaking from the cold he says to me, "Matt, this is my kind of weather"! As we walked off he tells me the only thing that's cold is one of his fingers. That's a man. Hat off to you buddy!
Pondskipper, how in gods name did you guys ever make it across that bay pulling sleds. I was dead tired after 100 yards.
-
I was out on there today with my wheeler and shanty , lets just say between the winds and everytime we stopped ice was cracking, I took the wheeler back to my truck and ended up hand pulling it . But looking forward to tomorrow when snow stops. And for those asking where to park , there is a public boat launch right in village . Its right in the area of the fire hall. watch for the big sign and follow it all the way back .
-
Pretty wild out there yesterday... Went from perfect to insane in the blink of an eye... I saw pondskipper pulling three sleds by himself through the snow... Man that looked rough...
-
That was captbook88 and he was pulling the atv also.
-
Yesterdays big catch.... Even mud puppies can't resist a slender spoon..... :o

Great guy at Chaumont hardware. Always helpful and friendly.
